I LOVE Columbia. The brand. The sizing is a bit on the big side. But Columbia stuff is so practical! My LOs snow pants have reinforced knees and bum. And the shoulder straps have Velcro so they can be extended. And everything is so well constructed! I used to work outdoor gear retail, and for quality to cost comparison, Columbia is the best.

I recommend bib style snow pants. And a fleece jacket for under a winter coat. I like the thin TNF ones, surprisingly. Definitely waterproof mitts. Two pairs if you can afford them.

@lamariniere: @Mrs. Coral: Thanks for the advice, ladies. I just don't want to buy something because it is a good deal and then regret it all winter. We do have a Columbia outlet nearby so I'll try there. Lands End is also having a sale this weekend so I'm going to see what they have there.

Make sure you get waterproof mitten! The fun is over once they get wet and they take a long time to dry.

I recommend the bib type snow pants versus the pants type, especially for an active kindergartner. Then if her coat rides up, her back and tummy will still be warm.

The cheap, cutesy snow gear is not the way to go, as it likely wot be warm enough. LLBean, Lands End, and Columbia are great. I wouldn't pay full price though, maybe check out a Columbia outlet if there is one near you.

I would either do something like a one piece ski suit with a full body zip, or a puffy and waterproof coat with separate ski bibs. Around here, H&M has a pretty good stock of lower priced children's winter/ski gear, not sure if the US H&M stores carry the same winter gear though. Last year I bought my son's waterproof puffy coat from Gap kids when they had a 40% off sale and I was really pleased with it.

As for boots, definitely get some that are known to be warm and waterproof. I bought Sorel boots for my son last year (they are rated to maybe -30°). They are really bulky, but I hate worrying about if my kid's feet are freezing or not.

I also like to get waterproof mittens and a balaclava instead of a regular hat.

We just moved this summer to the mountains and DD started kindergarten. The school sent home a note and said that she will need cold weather gear because they still go outside to play at recess even in snow. I'm not sure what I should be buying. She needs a new coat but should I buy one that comes with one of those bib things or a set with pants and a coat? The one piece of advice I've gotten is to buy good boots. Does anyone have any recommendations of good coat and boot brands to buy?
