@Crumbs: I think the boots are definitely necessary. When I would go pick up DS at the end of the day, his boots were always dry, but I would see parents struggling to put cold wet boots on their kids. Our daycare takes the kids out even if it is snowing or if there is snow on the ground, but not in the rain.

@Crumbs: i have no advice but  how daycare is mainly outside, they must have so much fun and great to encourage them to play out instead of play inside on video games.

@lamariniere: haha cute! I saw a boy wearing them as play pants at the sand pit at the playground, I thought the mom was SO SMART for that!

We have the rain suit too, I love it because I got the one with the stirrups for his feet so they stay tucked in his boots. He's got the ones that are bib style, like overalls.

@Crumbs: this is basically what all the Austrian kids were wearing in the fall, winter and spring at the park. My son's daycare requires the rain pants for outdoor play when it is cooler/cold. We have lined warm ones for winter and unlined ones for warmer weather that are good for muddy days. Maybe 2 pairs of each so there is always a clean pair?

Also, don't forget gortex boots if you can find them on sale. I thought they were supper pricey for kids shoes (good ones are around €75 here), but he wore them every day from fall-early spring and I was happy knowing his feet were warm. Warm gloves that stay on will be a must too. I've seen some with a long Velcro cuff that are easy to put on and stay on, but I don't know the brand. Maybe rubber rain boots for fall when it is still too warm for the big winter boots? I need to get a new pair for DS this fall.

We don't do rain suits here either, though DD owns rain boots and rain coat. At her daycare they don't go outside when it's raining hard. They do go outside in the snow, so she has snow boots, a snow suit (pants are overall style), good hats and mittens. I tend to dress her in leggings, long sleeved t-shirt and a sweater so it's easy to layer. Hanna Anderson makes nice thick leggings.

We dont really do rain suits here, so Im not sure? I would probably assume long sleeved shirt and leggings?

@zippylef: What do they wear when they're outside? Daycare is mainly outside here and I'm completely out of my element! For instance, what clothes go under a rain suit? I don't want to suffocate her, she gets warm so easily.

Here's a picture of the rain suit I'm planning to get but in a different color:

I do lots of layering. It's only warm enough for summer clothes for about a month here, so we do fall/winter clothes A LOT.

I tend to go pretty basic. Cardigans, hoodies, jackets, hats/gloves, winter coat. Fleece pants were good too, keep her nice and toasty. Thick knit tights in a variety of colors. That sort of stuff.

I have no idea how to dress a toddler for daycare. I want to take advantage of the summer deals and shop ahead. To those living in cold places, what do you recommend I should buy and how many?

I know I definitely need a rain suit as I see all the kids wearing one, but what else? Thanks!
