My baby does that when peo pl e are visiting, too! For her it was just for extra Mommy time because she was overstimulated. But she does love to eat and cuddle any time!

@Glitter: makes sense! There is really good info on Kellymom about oversupply if it is something you're concerned about. Both of the things you mentioned happen to me as well but I dunno if it's supply related or not.

Another vote for comfort nursing. My LO was the same way. I got her to take a pacifier around 3 mo, which saved my sanity. There's a section abt comfort nursing halfway down the page: http://kellymom.com/bf/normal/comfortnursing/

@Applesandbananas: Thanks for the link to kellymom.com! I'll be checking it out.

@Kemma: I stopped counting daily but we fall somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions because he nurses about every 2 hrs, except at night when he'll sleep for a 6-8 hr stretch. So that's comforting. Thanks for the info!

@nana87: we haven't offered a paci yet, but we are thinking about it. I don't mind comfort nursing, but i'm thinking of offering the paci so he stops the finger sucking!

@twodoghouse: thank you! Glad your babies are close in age and you can testify that it is normal.

@gilmoregirl: Yes, you are right. I can tell when the rhythm changes and he falls asleep, but I couldn't tell if he was dreamfeeding or comfort nursing. I assumed oversupply because often when he's feeding from one boob or if i'm pumping on one side, the other breast would somehow be activated and leak all over the place. I'd also often wake up with milk soaked right through my breast pads and top.

Sounds like comfort nursing. I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks if it doesn't bother you, but you could try a pacifier if you'd like.

As for frequency, LO nursed every two hours until he was 6-7 months old at least (more like every hour during growth spurts). Now at almost 11 months he's good for more like 3 hours most of the time. Of course he's pretty efficient when he wants to be now, but if he's sleepy he might nurse and snuggle for a long time.

Those flutters are comfort nursing, I think. My LO will sometimes take a boob nap if he's very tired and the flutters will come if I try to pull away. Sometimes I can successfully switch boob for pacifier and get him in the crib but sometimes, esp if he really needs the sleep, I let him boob nap as long as possible. If you watch him, you'll probably be able to tell when he goes from rhythmic sucking and drinking to sleepy flutters.

It sounds like your supply is fine though. I wouldn't assume oversupply just from the long periods of nursing because he's not likely to be drinking the whole time. I do have an oversupply though, and my guy still wants to eat about every two hours during the day. He is starting to lengthen now at four months (to 2.5 hours haha) but yesterday ate almost every hour. I'm pretty sure it's normal.

Sounds like comfort nursing to me. Both of my boys were/are comfort nursers. Actually my LO (15 weeks) is doing it right now but that is usually how I get him to take naps so I'm just going with it. Eventually they grow out of it. I can't remember when my older one stopped, but this too shall pass!

IMO if he is gaining well (which is seems like he is? 3 lbs in 2 months sounds good to me... Fia only gained 2 lb 8oz in 2 months and her docs were thrilled), and he's having 6+ heavy wet diapers/day, and he's a generally happy baby--- there is no reason at all to worry about supply. I'd guess either growth spurt(s) or comfort nursing. And if all the nursing doesn't bother you... I prob wouldn't mess with it. :) (but if it doesn't maybe some other ppl have ideas on how to help!)

Sounds like comfort nursing to me! LO went through phases of doing that, and didn't go more than 2 hours between feeding until 4 months. You could stop it with a paci or just let it pass. It will soon :)

Fluttering is comfort nursing. Do you use a pacifier? I would give him one after real sucking and swallowing stops. I doesn't sound like you need to supplement!

I don't know if it's normal, necessarily, but just wanted to tell you you're not alone! My kids prefer going 1 hr 45 min to 2 hrs between nursing sessions. And we had a rough nap week so some of their only naps were happening on the nursing pillow while still sort of sporadically nursing. I think mine are a little older than Gio (13 weeks) but I think it might be this age! Mine do get formula after BFing because I have low supply, but I wouldn't supplement if G is gaining normally!

Lo was like that before we figured out that I have low supply and she wasn't gaining, but that doesn't sound like the case for you. Have you tried offering a pacifier when he has been nursing for awhile? The Lc i saw taught me the difference btw when lo is just sucking and swallowing, so useful for figuring out when to end a session!

Sounds like you could just have a booby baby on your hands! My LO was a real booby baby and she still loves to nurse at 22 months. If your LO is gaining and happy and you're both ok with your bf'ing relationship then nurse on!

Just had another thought, LLL recommends 6-12 nursing sessions per 24 hours in the early months

I vote comfort nursing, especially with your description of flutters! My LO is 16m and would nurse all day if I'd let him. Totally normal! It sounds like you're doing a great job!

My mom constantly remarked about the frequency and duration that LO nursed and urged me to put him on a schedule and to only feed him 15 minutes from one side every 3 hours and my LC said that that was a great way to cause supply issues. In the first 12 weeks, your baby goes through a growth spurt every 5 minutes it feels like and feeding on demand, however absurd it feels (and I know it feels crazy, I had the king of cluster feeders!) just keep on keeping on :)

ETA - a weight gain of 6oz/week is perfect! Most drs want to see 4-8oz/week for breastfeeding babies. Kelly mom is a great resource for that kind of info, but if you're at all concerned, you could also double check with an IBCLC/LC or your pedi!

For the past few weeks DS has been nursing foreverrr. I'm talking an hour to an hour and a half. Within the past few weeks he also discovered his fingers and sucks on them every chance he can get. I noticed that sometimes he falls asleep while nursing and stops sucking, but if i try to pull away he resumes sucking, often in little flutters. We've spent a lot of time with family over the last few days and they've noticed how often I breastfeed. DH's aunt and sister both suggested that I supplement because it seems like DS is never full since he always wants to be on the boob.

Supplementing sounds unneccessary to me, but I'm willing to hear what you all think, given the following: I have no problems with supply, except possible oversupply at times. I have checked (after a good hour of him nursing) by squeezing my nipples and multiple squirts come out (sorry if TMI). DS is a happy baby except when he is hungry. If I take him off the boob before he stops himself, he does not cry and often does not wake up. This leads me to believe he is nursing more for comfort than for nutrition. However, within under 2 hrs he wants to be back on the boob. Shouldn't he remain satisfied for longer? He is a pretty small baby (he was born 7lbs 4 oz, and was up to 10lbs 4 oz at his 2 mnth appointment). Decent weight gain, I think, but he is still on the small side.

What does this sound like to you? Could he be just a very inefficient feeder? He did 10 minute sessions previously, so I always thought him efficient until now. Could it be comfort nursing? Could my nipples be releasing too slowly for him?
