I nursed. And I also tried to put LO on a schedule at that age and it just drove me craaaaaaaaaaazy. The more you can go with the flow the better. Somewhere around 5-6 months, I suddenly noticed she was on a schedule.

I agree with @heartonastring. My LO started to put herself on a (loose) schedule around 5/6 mo when her naps consolidated. Before that it would have been pretty impossible. Some naps were short and others were long. Obviously, all babies are different and yours might do okay with a schedule, but I would have just been frustrated.

@ElbieKay: I wouldn't worry too much about setting a rigid schedule, just follow his cues and a schedule will likely develop organically :)

Thanks all! My son clearly wants to nurse with me more frequently than he wants a bottle with another caregiver. Hence my question.

I also did a lot of pumping the first 8 weeks of his life due to nipple pain, so comfort nursing only became an option for us relatively recently. (He is 13.5 weeks old.)

I am trying to figure out if I can get him into a nap schedule, and I am wondering if this depends on his feeding schedule. He feeds more frequently with me (due to the comfort sucking) so I am not sure whether the different schedules will confuse him.

I let her nurse, but I really think that it's one of those things that is personality dependent/dependent on your needs etc. My LO is a crazy comfort nurser, and always has been, and she's almost one now and still comfort nurses a lot more than most babies and I am okay with taking the time (and I have the time to give). I remember in the hospital with her a nurse I didn't like said something about how I "shouldn't let the baby use me as a pacifer" which didn't sit well with me and I have given her free range on the nursing ever since. I think some babies are higher needs on the comfort nursing than others, and it has to mesh well with your personality too. For me with a high needs nurser and me being a person who doesn't need a lot of time away to recharge it works fine, but even if she wasn't my first baby we would be in a different situation! So I think it's just one of those things you need to assess in terms of what the baby is into and what your needs are!

I often nurse, unless for some reason I can't. But she won't take a pacifier or anything, so it's the only thing that works sometimes.

I comfort nursed up until she was three months or so. She then started this thing when she would comfort nurse while sleeping for over an hour before unlatching at night. Luckily, she started taking a pacifier then, so now I just do a pacifier switch. If she's awake though, I let her comfort nurse as long as she wants to.

With D I would have nursed. But with M I don't always. He takes a soothie often or sucks on his fists. I don't mind nursing him but I do have things to do (and another kid).

@hilsy85: this.

Also, early on I was more likely to just nurse. Once she was a few months I would or wouldn't depending on what else was happening, but I definitely would and still do nurse for comfort. She never took a paci and sometimes babies need to be comforted.

I nurse because it gives me a chance to connet w/ my LO in a way that no one else can... And they will only be this little fir so long, so I cherish the time.

I generally nurse any time she roots for me. I don't really know if she is hungry or not but it makes her happy and not scream and sometimes even sleep... so I go with it. (But my LO is only 4 weeks old, I might feel differently when she is older).

Nurse. I had supply issues both times, so any nursing was good nursing. I think I would have done the same regardless, but it made it pretty desirable to nurse whenever they would cooperate.

Depends how I was feeling! If I was feeling ok with it, I would go with it. If not (if my nipples were in pain, I wasn't feeling well, I was feeling touched out and stressed out), I would offer a paci. Or let DH hold LO!

I definitely did not only nurse for nourishment; I just don't think you need to always let baby comfort nurse if you're just not feeling it at that moment and need some time to yourself.

What do you do when you know that (1) your child isn't hungry; (2) s/he is fine whenever someone else holds him/her; and (3) s/he demands to nurse/comfort suck whenever you are holding him/her?

Do you just nurse? Or try to only allow nursing for nourishment?
