DD was at the exact same point at 9 months. Some consonant sounds and maybe reacting to her name, but none of the rest. She started clapping and pointing sometime before 12 months, waving and imitating around 13 months, and now at 15 months has about 8 words, a couple of signs, and clearly understands most of what we say. All of this to say I don't think you have anything to worry about yet.

@JoyfulKiwi: These are the forms that are pediatrician always has us fill out. They are good and I have known by the fact that our son has been in the grey that we do have issues we need help with.

I have T, 14 months. He was pointing, clapping and waving by 10 months or so, and knows a few signs. He is extremely communicative and understands and performs many simple tasks we ask him to do. He also uses gestures and the sound "eh" to ask for things. However, he only babbles consonant sounds here and there, and just started recently.

Then we have O, who is 12 months next week. O babbles nonstop and has 4 words she uses consistently and with meaning. However, she is significantly less focused on communicating. She makes eye contact, smiles and interacts more every day, but definitely doesn't respond to any requests or "ask" for anything, even using gestures.

Neither our pediatrician or our early head start teacher are at all concerned about either one. They're just super different personalities, basically. Such a wide range of normal and everything is happening so fast right now. It's been fascinating watching the two develop side by side in such different ways.

Our pediatrician does the Ages & Stages questionnaire. Here's a link. The last page gives a scoring rubric, so you can see what range G falls into and whether to be concerned.

My LO did all that stuff closer to one year as well. Does he make eye contact with you and smile in response to things you do? Our health nurse was more interested in that kind of thing.

My nine month old has been walking for almost a month now but neither claps nor points. She been waving since six months.
Milestones have such a great range of normal.
He'll be communicating before you know it.

My kiddo learned to clap at 10 months, just learned to point at 13 months, didn't wave until 12 months, and is very communicative at 14 months. I wouldn't worry. There's such a range of normal.

My son didn't clap or point til one year. And he might have not made consonant sounds til
After 9 mo too! My very conservative ped wanted to get him tested for early intervention but i declined. Mommy instinct said he's fine and he is interested in other things but will catch up fine. And he did soon after and at 2.5 is not "behind" on anything

I don't even think my Ped checked or asked about those things at 9 months. DD1 walked at 9.5 months but didn't clap until after a year. I take a lot of those lists with a grain of salt!

@Truvy: Just googling "9 month milestones". A variety of lists have significant overlap. MIL is a former teacher so she likes "goals" that she can work on with LO.

Which "lists" are you looking at? I find so many of them to varying in what my baby's skills are supposed to be at what age. My pediatrician even told me that you are not supposed to be able to answer "yes" to all the questions they have on the ASQ forms at well checks at each age. I do remember that my son wasn't gesturing or pointing until closer to 12 months. He was sort of waving and trying to clap around 9 months, which I guess he copied from us.

So, according to the "lists," LO (9m) should be babbling with consonant sounds, waving, copying gestures, pointing, reacting to his name, and clapping. LO does none of these, except for maybe consonant sounds. Supposedly MIL & FIL (babysitters) have been working on these things with him for about a month or 2 and he hasn't picked up on them. LO's 9m appt is this Friday. I wasn't too worried bc I know everything is a range, but then I noticed they all have to do with communication and that seems significant to me that they're all in one category.... What do you think?

In gross motor and fine motor milestones, he's just about average....
