Yup! There are SO many CSAs near us! The one we belong to has a wait list and usually maxes out before its open to the general public. Ours has different share sizes, we go with the individual which is perfect for the two of us. But we eat a lot of veggies. I love that they're Certified Naturally Grown. The restrictions of "organic" are so ridiculous and very prohibitive to small farmers.
Looked into joining a meat share but it's so $$$. Not feasible this year with baby and new house.

There's also dairy, poultry, egg, bread shares near us!

My fave part about CSAs is supporting local farmers and knowing exactly where our food is coming from :)

@joyjoy: We had one like that in Seattle, but there's no option like that here.

They were teeny-tiny-mini-slugs (like, the entire thing would have fit on an eraser head.)

Food, Inc. was really good. I have Weight of the Nation on my DVR to watch too.

I haven't done one, but I really want to! I'm just afraid the food will go bad before I use it since I don't cook often enough. The are quite a few veggie CSAs in my area, but I don't know of any meat. I should yet.

My mom said there's actually a waiting-list for the one she used to belong to.

I just showed my AP Language seniors Food, Inc. today...the stuff going on with our food supply makes me so angry!

Last year was the first time I got to join a CSA and I LOVED it. Unfortunately, that farm (my dad's!) won't be able to do veggies this year so I joined a different one. Hopefully it's as good!

If you want an indicator of how worthwhile I find it, last year I drove ~85 miles over a mountain pass almost every Thursday between June 7 and October 7. Fortunately, this year there are a few more families joining and so we'll split the drive up and hopefully only have to drive down once a month or so.

Love, love, love it!

I love our CSA. I usually just wash off any bugs (don't really get a lot) and have DH deal with any worms. I've never found slugs, though.

@mrs. jacks: Our CSA sends out a list of available produce the week prior to delivery, and I pick out what I want to receive in my next box. It's like shopping online for my CSA produce. It doesn't seem like it's a common CSA setup, but it might be worth looking into if there's something similar in your area if you liked the convenience of CSA drop offs.

Ew, slugs!

Funnily enough I just placed the order for our summer share. This year we are doing veg, meat, and artisan (cheese, bread, "pantry staples"). I've loved having the produce in the past and am looking forward to our bigger box this year.

@mrs. bird: agreed! Some bugs are a small price to pay for local + organic food.

I was just looking into joining a CSA! I was wondering if it would be worth it for just DH & myself, or if we'd end up wasting a lot of food. I think I'd rather spend some extra time rinsing my food than eating food the bugs don't even wanna eat :)

@mrbee: thanks for the tip! I'll have to start diluted vinegar-washing everything.
@Mrs. Jacks: We have 2 farmer's markets in our town, and I always have too much going on when the one farmer's market is open. And the other is infested with rats. The produce CSA offers a "Medium" share which is small enough for 2 adults.

I think instead of the meat CSA that we'll be purchasing a "half cow" with my parents or our friends, and buying organic poultry where we can.

The closest CSA to us is about an hour away. It's a huge drawback to living in a more rural area. But the farmers market will be starting up in our town in a month and I'm really excited for that! I never took advantage of it in the past years but knowing what i know now about organic vs conventional produce, I will be there every week. Wonderful thing about summer :)

I wish there were more options for CSA's or things of the like year-round. It's hard to find good, organic produce off-season.

Diluted vinegar is a great way to clean off fresh produce!!

It also works great at killing slugs! :-)

I tried a grassfed, local meat CSA for the first time this year, and also a produce CSA. The meat csa has been going on for a while, but last night was the produce CSA's first delivery. Local, organic, AMAZING...

But I saw a few slugs while i was washing the greens, and can't shake the idea that I just ate (at least) one. Oh well. It's a small price to pay...or extra protein, depending on your POV.

This was augmented by the fact I just found a little baby green worm of some sort on the strawberry i was about to pop into my mouth...
