I actually used a complaint jar in my classroom last year. I had a group of kids who would complain all the time! We talked about sometimes you just need to get the thought out of your head, and how if we write it down, crumple it up, and put it in the jar that we can get it out without saying it out loud. It was amazing to see how fast it changed the atmosphere in the classroom. We went from 4-5 complaints in a 30 minute period to a few a day! Kids could write a complaint on the paper beside the jar anytime during the day, and put it into the jar. At the end of the day I would read them privately just to ensure that nothing major was going on. I then told them that I took them all home and burned them in my fire pit (which I didn`t but they really liked the idea!)I used the jar often as well, and it totally worked! Write it down, get it out, crumple it up and forget about it!

I'm in for the challenge. I think I'm "glass half empty" I don't want to be that way.

Maybe if you take it out you have to donate it to charity (one you can't stand?) And whatever is left you can buy a treat?

I am not sure that I am going to join in right now but good luck to you, it's awesome that you're being proactive!

I don't understand how the first option would work (what would money taken out go to? or what would money left over go to? how do you decide how much to start with in there and what happens when it's empty) so I think the second option would work better. All the complaining money could go toward LO's college fund.

I really love the idea, but it almost seems like rewarding yourself for complaining?

I also wonder where the money would go when you take it out, hmmm...

I'm interested in exploring this more, though. I really want to focus on being more positive.

Haha, that's a great idea! I've become such a complainer too lately, it would be funny to turn it into a good thing! How long would you do this for?

I don't know if it's the lack of sleep, or if it's just me getting older, but I've noticed that I complain a lot. I'm trying to turn it around and I thought that making myself use a complaint jar (and put money in every time I complain), I might train myself to look at the positive instead of being so negative... (or at least learn to not verbalize my complaints - haha)

I've seen two different versions - one is that you start w/ a certain amount of money in the jar and take the money out every time you complain. The other is the opposite, and you put money in the jar every time you complain.

I think I'll go w/ the 1st, so I can give myself a treat w/ the money at the end.

Anyone willing to try this out w/ me?
