I actually did not start by going to the store... That would absolutely overwhelm me too! I read a lot of posts on HB, and then started online. Then I went to the store to "verify" the items are what I want. I just play around with the registry online pretty much up till the shower based on new reviews, info, etc.

And don't worry about $ point! I would put really expensive stuff on there just to get the discount later.. And all the other stuff naturally comes with a big range of prices so there's something for everyone!

And honestly don't go crazy. I was returning/exchanging like crazy, and then there's stuff I waited till DD came to buy... If yo have Amazon prime it's so quick anyway!

The good thing is that you can always buy stuff later if you think you need it. There's simply no way you can determine all of the stuff you'll need in advance.

One thing that kind of gave me "peace" with the choices I was making is that there is always going to be better, newer stuff out there. You've got to just make a decision and stick with it. If it turns out to be wrong, no big deal.

I agree with a lot of the previous posters- do it all online! We used Lucie's List and read a lot of product reviews on Amazon (and various blogs) to make our initial registry, then only went to a store to see / touch / play with the items we'd picked in person and compare them to other options.

I was worried that people would judge our registry for being too expensive because I picked mostly the top-rated products in each category (which tended to cost more than average), but the first few people to look at it and comment told me there weren't enough expensive items. It's important to have a variety of price ranges. If someone wants to spend more on a baby gift, they want to be sure that it's something you'll want and use.

I didn't use any "baby holders" (swing/bouncer/etc) but I used carriers constantly. I feel like you have to get one or the other, because sometimes you need your hands. Cooking, eating, putting on makeup, cleaning, etc... you need hands occasionally. :)

Make sure to register for a baby holder like a bouncer! You will need to pee sometimes and baby will like being able to sit up and see the world! We have a $30 Fisher Price bouncer.

Do me and yourself a favor...register for at least one bottle...you never know what will happen and it is nice to be prepared. I ended pumping for the first month of DD's life.

Also, I registered for white Gerber onesies in every size up to 6-9 mo. and I registered for socks.

You sound like you have my problem...don't make too many assumptions--you'd be surprised how much people love you and that baby and want to spoil you. As long as you have a variety of price points and the stuff you need in there, don't sweat it!

I'd be happy to review your online registry and offer feedback! Good luck and don't sweat it!

Aside from having some price variation (because honestly I think it's sort of rude not to) I wouldn't worry what people think. People are going to judge you. That's motherhood!

Also, you don't have to do it all at once. :)

@dc yoga bee: Totally agree! @babycanuck register for what you really want and will actually use! I also agree to pick up a few bottles. You may want to get out of the house for a few hours to get a massage or something and your SO may need to feed the baby. You don't need more than a couple bottles though (I WOH and only own 4 bottles).

@Cole: I think you hit the nail on the head! For example, I had the 4moms play yard on my registry, and DH thought it was crazy to have that on the registry. I will purchase it myself even if someone doesn't buy it because portability and ease of use are really needed. I'll be the one toting it to my parent's house every week! But, I let DH pick out one, and he picked a different one that was really hard to put together! Someone called me two nights ago and told me that the pack and play I had on my registry was awful. It's heavy, hard to put together and take apart, and they know I'll be traveling weekly with LO. They suggested I put the 4moms one on there. I couldn't help but laugh.

I wouldn't purposely put somethig on there because it was cheap or nor just because it's expensive. I'd pick the things I liked, but things like furniture, stroller, and the car seat we went ahead and bought ourselves.

Oh, and people love bottles. Even if you plan to breastfeed, you may end up needing to feed bottled milk at some point. All the moms I know that are breastfeeding also had bottles on their registry. I just picked two starter sets.

@babycanuck I wouldn't limit my registry because you can always get a discount to go buy stuff yourself off the registry after the shower (and people will buy gifts once the baby is born too). If you intend to buy something, why not put it on there? A lot of my friends liked buying the activity gym/playmat, swing and bouncer since their kids loved them so much. You will need some place to put baby when you are taking a shower, making coffee, etc. We really liked the Baby Bjorn bouncer, the Skip Hop playmat, and the Mamaroo swing. It sounds like a lot of gear, but I liked having options of where to put DS before he became mobile (and the bouncer and playmat traveled well so we brought them on trips with us).

Looks like you are opting out of all baby holders (bouncer, swing, RNP), you are definitely going to want some kind of baby holder and if space is an issue, a portable baby holder. Where would you like to put baby while you shower, drink a cup of coffee, scarf down a sandwich? If i were, I'd think it through and pick the smallest, most convenient baby holder for your registry

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: this! That's great advice, not to put anything on there that you wouldn't buy on your own!

I echo the sentiments of doing it all online vs going into the store! I also used the Baby Bargains book as a good reference guide when I couldn't decide between two things...mostly gear related like strollers or car seats or high chairs! And also use Amazon for reviews too! With my first daughter I only registered on Amazon, they have this universal registers option that allows you to add wanted items from non-Amazon sites!

@babycanuck: I agree, plus even if you did want an exersaucer type thing your baby wouldn't use it for a while anyway so why have it hanging around. Oh and one more idea- check on it once a week or so to see what's been purchased so you don't accidentally leave it with all the items from a certain price point already claimed and only the pricier items left over.

@babycanuck: if there are things that you would purchase yourself, like the swing or infant seat (are you referring to the car seat?) that you mentioned opting out of, I'd add them so you can take advantage of any completion discount the registry might offer. Also, sometimes people like to pool together to buy a big ticket item. But definitely don't include anything you don't want taking up space in your house.

@youboots: +1 for lucie's list

Don't put anything on your registry you wouldn't purchase on your own. Your family & friends will find things they can afford on it or just gift off registry.

You can always edit your registry to pair it down and swap out items. For example, potty training and solid food gear like those toddler size bib smocks may make your registry unnecessarily long.

Thanks everyone. I will check out Lucies list for sure.

I opted out of registering for some items:
- bouncer/exersaucer/play mat because I'm sure someone will just buy a play mat, though we don't have a ton of room for a ton of "stuff"
- bottles because I'm hoping to nurse. If all fails I will go buy feeding stuff
- clothes - everything I read online is that people will buy whatever clothes they want, so I didn't bother "dictating"
- swing/rnp
- nursing cushion...I have so many pillows (hah)
- infant seat - I feel like it's presumptuous to have people buy this for us so early..

I did register for a pack n play, though if I don't get it, it's not a huge deal. It's a nice to have but not a need to have.

I was really worried about people's reaction to my choices for some reason, I was a nanny for a long time and I knew there were certain things I wanted a specific version of and occasionally they were expensive options. What I found though was that people actually seemed most peeved that I put almost nothing expensive on my registry. A few groups went in on gifts and I really didn't give them many choices.

And I had a few people mention that had I registered for the crappy version of something they just would have bought the better one anyway! Nose Frida and muslin swaddles both come to mind in that category.

My advice is to do the bulk of registering online and don't over think too much. A lot of things don't have a perfect answer, like diaper pails, pick a name brand one that looks reasonable to you and be done. Boppy vs my breast friend? Well, it's impossible to know which you will prefer so just pick the one that looks better to you!

Have fun!

Physical stores totally overwhelm me. I did everything online (Amazon and BBB). HB has great registry guides, as does Lucie's List. People can go in together to purchase larger items. But it's always good to have a wide variety of price points. I was surprised at how generous people were.

Oh man.

Today I went with my mom to Babies R Us to register for this munchkin. I was so overwhelmed it actually made me sick when I left the store.

I'm so worried that people will think my choices are too expensive or not good enough...am I the only person who overthinks these things big time?
