@snowjewelz: I think the downhill trajectory of this thread was predictable from the beginning, and i feel badly for the blogger who has contributed to the blog section this past month.

FWIW, there have always been some blog posts that have not been my "cup of tea." It's easy enough to ignore what you don't like (and/or engage if you feel the need) and focus your attention on what is useful to you.

I don't think any of us hold hellobee to same standard as we would a peer-reviewed, scientific paper. It's our job as media consumers to be as information literate as possible. Whether on hellobee or elsewhere in the big bad internet world, do your background research and don't believe everything you read.

@BadgerMom: @Dahlia: the waffling between opinion and fact (or really, conflating the two) is my biggest issue with the posts.

I was truly interested in whether others had noticed and/or felt the same way. It's definitely clear from this thread that there are a lot of HB users who read but don't comment on blog posts, so I agree increasing engagement via comments is a good goal.

@Mrs. Snowflake: I love the your voice in the blogs!

@gestalt: I do agree. With the santa post, I saw some bees comment that they strongly disagree so I think that's a great, direct way to "counter" the opinion publicly. I completely understand and validate the origin concerns, but I think the comments here kind of went downhill at some point

@gestalt: I agree. Having honest, respectful discussion within the comments of the blog posts themselves would also allow those who find HB anew and read the posts to see that the community is able to have honest discussions and disagreement as well as present alternative perspectives and information to that given in the posts. It may even influence how the blogger presents future posts on HB.

Hellobee was never meant to be a website where everyone shared the same parenting philosophy. The bloggers have always been very diverse, and i'm pretty sure there have been posts covering very controversial topics or providing a viewpoint with which i completely disagreed. Also, i see blog posts as opinion pieces only, not something for me to take as fact.

It would be more effective to voice your disagreement with the blogger on a specific post or write the Bees directly.

@jape14: I like variety. I like hearing about things/ideas that are weird or that I might think are nuts. To be very frank, I love having a post that makes me think rather than yet another gift guide (which I am sure are still coming). And if it bugs me enough, I make a comment to the author, and I encourage you to do the same.

As to your concern about the “tone” of the site changing, I wouldn’t worry too hard. There have been plenty of wacky posts over the years, but they have never become the focus of the site.

@Dahlia: Yes! this: "I think the biggest problem is that the author can't decide if these are 1st person stories about her parenting (like the other blog posts) or she's an "expert" or reporter speaking in the 3rd person." ETA. I appreciate the different perspectives shared on Hellobee, but opinions should be clearly expressed as such.

Interestingly enough I've felt similarly about some of the links in the link round up. I really enjoy Bee's link round up but sometimes I feel like the come from a single perspective. Obviously some of the sources are quality sources (ie. New Your Times, Washington Post, etc.) but sometimes the sources seem to be a little suspect and I'm just not really sure how accurate they are and how much of some of them is, like you said @jape14:, just opinion based on pseudo science.

I’ve yet to read anything on the HelloBee Blog that offends or concerns me. I come here to read about other women’s perspectives and experiences and I expect that the content (which I take with a grain of salt) will provide an array of ideological stances. Moreover, while I appreciate that HelloBee is in a major sense a communal space, I also recognize that this website is Mrs. And Mr. Bee’s brainchild. It’s in their purview to post anything they want, whenever they want, written by whomever they chose. Finally, I think we need to respect that we’re all fragile. The Bee’s have had a tough year. Judy is learning how to be a single parent. They’re helping each other out by sharing content/blog space. This is what friends do… this is what this community is supposed to do… support one another during difficult times. We’re not perfect people, and neither are the Bees or Judy. We need to give one another the space to be imperfect humans.

I'm going to try to make more of an effort. Perhaps if we all become more involved in the types of posts we'd like to see we'll receive more of that content.

Ehh... I'm guessing we're seeing her so often because of what she writes in her bio on her website: "My innovative approach and ability to connect with high-level influencers have led to remarkable success for my clients, where we attract the kind of attention that matters." - i.e., her job is social media branding.

I think the biggest problem is that the author can't decide if these are 1st person stories about her parenting (like the other blog posts) or she's an "expert" or reporter speaking in the 3rd person. I wouldn't mind the different opinion if they were presented like the other blog posts, but these definitely read as if she's some authoritative figure, which she's not. (From her article about forgiveness, "Thankfully, as a writer for MindBodyGreen, I get access to the latest scientific research on numerous topics that I personally care about: conscious parenting, healthy living, mindfulness, and relationships.)

Plus all the linking to other sites/content makes me wonder what her motivations are, given that her job is strategic marketing and content creation...

My impression is that this was content taken from the blogger's personal blog, and so they were not written with the hellobee audience in mind... also why there have been SOOOO many of her posts lately.

I do not identify with her world view and stopped reading her content after the first few posts. I love @ChiCalGoBee: 's idea to open up to regular posters for content.

I also skip Judy's posts. Not my style.

BUT! Just came here to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the seasoned bloggers who are writing posts for us, the bloggers that are engaging with our community on the boards (@Mrs. Carrot:  ), and to the new blogger(s) who are contributing at a time where many have stepped away. It's so nice to see the site coming back to life. I'm sure there are quite a few bloggers who just don't write posts anymore due to the hiatus. They might come back, or new bloggers might be introduced. I think Judy's posts are filler for now, or she would have just been introduced as another new blogger. In fact, I think NOT introducing her as a new blogger is quite indicative that it is NOT necessarily "the way that HB is going to go". Why make her a "guest" vs a permanent fixture if that was the case?

RE: the Santa post. I did read that one because I'm terribly undecided on how my family is going to do Santa. I agree that it was biased towards her view, but I do appreciate that she tried to offer a different perspective (even in passing).

I love to read any and all blog posts, and appreciate the diversity that is offered. I have learned a few things from her posts; while not necessarily agreeing with everything that was said.
I do agree that it may be better to stay away from the 'opinion' pieces though; I would love to read more on co-parenting, her travels/move, etc.

I think concerns might be better offered as comments directly on her posts vs. on the boards, so that she has the opportunity to respond directly to them, and perhaps learn from them going forward?

I haven't thought that deeply about the "controversial" posts. I try to comment on every single blog post to show my appreciation at how hard all bloggers work and I actually really appreciate a lot of her posts about her divorce because of how raw/real they are. I do also appreciate"something different", and I read everything at my own risk anyway. Also her guest spot is coming to an end either this month or next month, FYI cause I had asked and Mrs Bee responded.

I'm mostly with @Anagram about the differing perspectives. I haven't loved most of those posts either, but my sense is that the blogger is a friend of the Bees, and because of the site management challenges this year, many of the bloggers (myself included) haven't written as much so Bee is trying to fill the space and demand for content, and I take it as any blog - I read it with a healthy skepticism and move on or offer my perspective if I really disagree (like the Santa one). Ultimately controversy drives discussion, right? I do agree that some of the posts came off as more "scientific" and "backed by evidence" than they really needed to be, but blog posts have never been vetted for stuff like that, as far as I know.

FWIW, I know a few folks are working on gift guides and the usual Want/Wear/Need/Read posts that are done around this time of year so I think those are coming.
