Studies show that infants & toddlers don't get confused when exposed to different languages. Their brains are actually much, much better than adults at learning multiple languages and are able to learn and tell which words and language rules go with which language quite easily. If you want your child to be bilingual, then you should expose your LO to these films and music etc at the earliest age possible. I'd suggest you do some more research.

Completely unprofessional advice based on a few classes in college...I know children are born with the ability to make all the sounds in different languages. You know how some sounds are really tricky to master because they aren't in our language, like rolled r's in spanish? Or picking up on different emphases in Chinese? We lose that ability by age 12 or so, which is why people have accents if they learn a language after that.

So maybe hearing those languages, even if she doesn't learn them, will help her a teensy bit if she decides to pick one up down the road!

I wouldn't worry! Lots of kids are raised by bi-lingual or tri-lingual parents and they all end up with a much higher capacity to learn language :) I've heard they might start talking later in those scenarios but then often speak 2 languages at the same time.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago about how small children (I think under age 2?) pick up words from parents, not media. The article was talking about how if your kid uses curse words, it's most likely that they heard it from parents, not tv. Anyway, if you apply that same concept to your situation, your LO probably won't start mixing random french and korean words unless you do at home...? I am a layman and I don't remember where the article was from, and this is just my interpretation. :)

I would think it could only be good for a baby to be exposed to the sounds of different languages. You could even use it and send your LO to language classes when they are old enough. They'll have a head start by already being comfortable with the sounds. I think as long as you are speaking one language to LO there shouldn't be any confusion.

@Crumbs: I wouldn't worry about this, especially if you listen to a broad range of languages!

I like watching foreign films and follow Asian dramas and although I dont have time to watch them now, if ever I have time again (lol), I'll probably start watching again.

I'm a little concerned about LO listening to all these different languages and getting confused. For instance, I watch Japanese, Korean and Chinese dramas and like French films. I have tons of foreign songs as well. I don't plan on teaching LO any of these languages because I don't speak them! I know babies are little sponges so I don't know how to handle it without cutting all foreign anything altogether.

Anyone else listen to foreign music and watch foreign films and dramas? Do you play them around your LO or do you wait until they're asleep? I'm curious to hear how others deal with this.
