@crazydoglady: @Grace: @autumnleaves: @wrkbrk: Thanks so much for these suggestions. I’m going to offer them all up to DH and have him decide what sounds best.

When my brother died, one thing that I was surprised about was that literally any kind gesture was so welcome. Prior to that experience, I had never experienced a death with someone I was very close to and had been worried about getting it “right” or saying the “right” words, etc.

Same agree. A nice card and gift card for some food will be appreciated.

When my mom passed away earlier this month, my coworkers donated money to the charity we selected in lieu of flowers but a few other coworkers gave me a separate gift of cash and suggested I do something for me with it.
Outside of work getting together with close friends one night was also good for my soul.
ETA: oh if the coworker has a child, maybe giving him $5 or $10 to give in memory of to a cause. A friend did that with my boys and I loved it.

A coworker made a donation to Cancer Care when my dad died of cancer. We hadn’t made a request for donations, but I still thought it was really sweet. I wouldn’t rule out an in memorium donation to the Diabetes Foundation or the Addictions Foundation or anything elae that makes sense.

What about a heartfelt note with a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant inside so he doesn't have to think about dinner for a night when they get back into town?

DH’s manages an employee at his company whose brother died for complications of alcoholism/diabetes. They have gotten to be friends outside of work so it’s more than an acquaintance but not a close friend. The workplace is sending flowers but DH wants to do something personally. There isn’t a place to make donations and the family/funeral is not close (so sending food is out). Knowing DH, he would like to do send/give a token gift to let him know we are sorry for his loss. I lost a brother less than a year ago to addiction so I feel for the guy, but I can’t come up with anything even from my own experience. I just remember that a handwritten card with a heartfelt personal note can feel so touching and yet I think DH feels like he needs to do more.
