Just wait. My son (1 yr) likes to play with the other nipple while nursing. Ugh that makes my skin crawl.

We only used nursing for nutrition... for comfort we used a pacifier. It worked great for us and he dropped the pacifier no problem when he found his fingers. Wouldn't have done it any other way!

Since I gave my LO a pacifier about 24 hours ago, he stopped with the 'playing around' and our nursing sessions are efficient. I didn't even realize how much he was comfort nursing, but now that he has the pacifier for that it's over. I used to have to break his latch too a lot recently, and now that has stopped.

@regberadaisy: right? I know she is growing cause I noticed her Newborn diapers leaving red marks on her legs/Tummy so I moved to 1s which are more roomy for her. She also is wetting plenty of diapers but with the poop slowing and a more fussy baby I get paranoid!

Isn't the Mom paranoia terrible? LO takes bottle or breast from me no complaints and I hear her drinking I'm fine! It's when she get sleepy and starts fooling around that I get strict!

Today we started crib naps to transition her to her own room and make sure she is learning how to self soothe!

Breastfeeding is such a day to day love hate thing for me. It's so hard thinking I may not notice her not getting enough food. Plus daycare is around the corner and I just don't think I will have the tenacity to pump/build a freezer stash for her. I needed her to be well versed in breast/bottle from day 1.

@Nskillet: we're at the same spot. I supplement with formula probably twice a day because I'm afraid she's not getting enough. I'm convinced I don't produce much during the day and more at night.
She loves to nibble as well and I've started unlatching her if she nibbles for more than a minute without swallowing. I hate to do it but Im trying to break her of it. I think it makes it harder for my husband because she needs it to comfort since he has no boobs! And it will make the transition to daycare harder as well.

Her poop has also lessened in the last week but I think it's suppose to at week 3?? Her wet diapers are still plenty. I'm tempted to take her to the peds for a weigh in tho!!

If she gets rough she gets the soother, I just can't handle having my nipples abused like that! This also helps them learn to fall asleep without breastfeeding.

I dont like it either because my baby will do this and breast millk will then be dripping out the side of her mouth and all over both of us... If I am confident that she really isnt eating anymore than sometimes I will break the latch but usually I just leave her

My LO does a lot of omfort nursing as well, but I found that usually if I pull slightly away (not enough to be painful) like I'm going to take my nipple away she will usually stir awake enough to resume eating for at least a few minutes, and then she falls asleep. If it doesn't seem to be working after a couple of times, I break her latch, burp her, and offer the other side. Sometimes she takes it, sometimes she just stays asleep. As far as her dirty diapers, my LO was having poops after every feeding in the beginning, and they slowly started decreasing until she got down to 1-2 times a day now.

Its important to let them nurse but if they aren't actively nursing there is no reason to let them lay there and "nibble".

I think there is a 3 month growth spurt where they do want to nurse ALL THE TIME but you can try to help them learn how to wait for a "meal" instead of just a "snack". We tried to stretch LO to feeding every 2 hours (from start to start). Around 3 weeks and in the evenings it got hard to push her to that 2 hour mark, so we often fudged and let her nurse more frequently. It helped her really build up an appetite and she would actually eat for a long time.

Thanks girl! On occasion the sensation makes my skin crawl!!! Pumping also doesnt seem to work for me lately. She seems to be gaining weight but her pooping has gotten inconsistent. 1-2 times a day max and sometimes a day with nothing. I assume that is the formula?

I didn't know liking comfort nursing existed! Lol I have over active letdown so comfort nursing isn't really an option here bc DD has to change her latch & technique to keep from getting a flood of milk & it ends up pinching my nipple! eek!

It takes like 5 MAAAAYBE 10 minutes to empty my breast & then she gets a pacifier until she gets her comfort nursing fix

As long as baby is gaining & has enough wet/dirty dipes you have a sufficient supply. Keep it up momma! :)

DD is 3 weeks 2 days old and I hate the sensation of comfort nursing her. She nibbles and licks and chomps at my nipple usually once shes fallen asleep at the breast. I hate being used as a paci. I know they say not to ever take the baby off the breast but I always break her latch because the sensation is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Could this affect my supply? Is DD just a really efficient nurser because she isnt taking sips after 5-10 mins max each side? I go to bed with sore nips/boobs due to how much theyve been used all day I supplement with formula her last 2 feedings.

I was so confident last week about breastfeeding!
