I haven't really sleep trained DD but I think I might have to soon also. She used to sleep from 8-530 then backdown after nursing until 7 but about a month ago she started what I think is teething (no teeth yet!). So when she got up fussing once a night I got her. That eventually spiraled to now 2-3 times a night and nursing is the only way to calm her down. Like you, I think I've fed into the problem but I couldn't bear letting her cry if she was in teething pain plus a growth spurt. Hoping others have advice so I can figure out what to do too!

I have just started sleep training my second LO. He is five and a half months old now and it took about nine nights but tonight he finally just cried for ten minutes and was out. My DH and I decided to sleep train earlier with my son than my daughter, because she was 15 months old. That was so hard. It was terrible. But, it worked. She use to get up so frequently during the night that I hadn't slept eight hours in a row until we started sleep training.

This is what helped me get through it: They are babies and don't know how to sleep. They don't know how to sooth themselves to sleep, and therefor need to be given a chance to figure out how to get themselves to sleep. By you rocking, they begin to rely on you. Every book I have read said that if you don't allow your baby a chance to figure out how to sleep they will need you to put them to sleep whenever they wake, which is about every two to three hours. (Adults awake that frequently as well, but we know how to get back to sleep and don't even fully wake up anymore).

Also, get a video monitor. That way you can watch your baby to make sure nothing horrible is wrong, but you can turn the volume off. Get as far away from the bedroom as possible. Distract yourself.

I really like the book by Mindell "Sleep Training through the night," because it isn't too clinical and offers tactics to help you get through the sleep training. It sucks, but it works! I recommend you don't wait until your LO is 15 months old, like we did with our first one, because then you have to worry about the baby climbing out of the crib too! Good luck :)

I wrote out a reply on my phone and sonehow it got deleted...argh!

Maybe try reading the book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child...lots of people on here used it for sleep training guidance. He has studied babies and sleep and has some tips for sleep issues such as night waking. I know one thing he mentions in his book is to move up bedtime which helps with night waking especially in babies that were previously able to STTN...he says it is counterintuitive but earlier bedtimes usually means babies sleep better and longer...most parents try to keep their kids up later thinking it will mean their baby will wake up later but his studies say it doesn't work that way.

Anyway, maybe like @Erwoo suggested, try eliminating the third catnap and keep her up but move bedtime earlier. Dr. Weissbluth says that often happens when babies transition from 3 naps to 2. It's sad bc it often means little time for working parents to see their babies but it helps with sleep problems. It's hard for my husband but my LO goes to bed around 5:30-6:00 so he doesn't get much time with her...she sleeps from 5:30ish to 7:30ish...he knows she will only be little for so long and soon enough he will get to spend more time with her during the week

It helped me a lot having a few resources to refer to...every baby is different and every mom has to do what she feels is best for her family. I just found it helpful using resources from people who have studied babies and have some advice that has proven to work for the majority of people.

GOOD LUCK!!

Do you think she would be okay to drop a nap? It might help her sleep better at night. Babycenter.com sent me something around my son's 3 month saying something about him only needing two naps a day now. I was surprised b/c I didn't think he was ready and still not; but I'm guessing since your DH is 6.5 months it could be worth a try? Try to also keep her up on the car ride home so she doesn't take a power nap. I also turn to my sons' pediatrician for advice b/c she always has great advice. Good luck!

I was wondering how old is your LO?

(I have no advice, but will be following this thread to read the other peoples' advice. I'm still a rock or nurse to sleep mama of a 3.5 month old).

ETA: DD is about 6.5 months now, about to start crawling.

I know I need to, but I'm scared to do it. I don't want to hear my LO cry... because her crying escalates so bad, so quickly. But, her sleep has deteriorated since about 2.5 months old (as soon as she started daycare). Once she was at daycare, she was hit with one cold after another and couldn't sleep well, and therefore woke quite a bit.

She used to sleep 8-10 hours at a time, and then it went to 5, then 3 and now it's down to 2. She takes great naps during the day and goes down easily at night, but she just won't stay asleep for more than 2 hours. I'm not sure if the waking is due to the developments she's been making or just because I've egged it on and nursed/rocked her to sleep when she woke up sick, but I need to do something for the sake of my sanity.

Here's her current sleep schedule:
7:30am - up for the day
9:00 - 10:00 - 1st nap
12:00 - 2:00 - 2nd nap
4:00 - 5:00 - 3rd nap
(sometimes a power nap on the ride home from 5:30-6:00)
8:00pm - bedtime
11pm - 1st wake up
1am - 2nd wake up
3am - 3rd wake up
(sometimes another wake up around 5am)

Help!!
