Try googling sambucus / sambucol.
It's natural and works for me better than tamiflu (I think you can take them at the same time, you can check)

Both my kids have two strains of the flu last year and our ped said they didn't have to have tamiflu. Two reasons--it is $$$ and barely lessens the symptoms in the time the kids would probably get over the flu. She was exactly right and in about 2-3 days they were feeling better. They were 9 months and 2.5 at the time.

@lemondrop: that's just how we have medicated our cats--hadn't thought of that method for our wiggly LO! Very comforting that your 3 year old came through it fine! This is in my back pocket now!

@MamaG: she used to eat a whole mini jar of yogurt a day but when she decided she no longer ate purées a month or two ago she also started refusing yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce and many other former favorites. :meh:

I wrap mine up in a blanket or towel, have my husband hold their head and stick the syringe in the corner of their mouth and give it in 2-3 portions.

My oldest takes meds just fine by mouth now at 3 years, so this has in no way scarred him from taking medicine.

But I do this to cats and dogs every so I'm used to fighting, clawing creatures. Good luck!

@junebugsmama: this is super helpful. I feel like we are going to need octopus arms to accomplish this, even with both my husband and I, as she is so amazing at squirming right out of my arms or arm blocking her own mouth. It's amazing how she can basically defeat two strong adults single-handedly! Kids are their own kind of superheroes, I now realize!

I have no advice on the tamiflu (I'm allergic so we won't give it to LO in case she is too). But I just wanted to let you know I had the flu a few weeks ago and my husband and toddler both managed to not catch it despite being around me quite a bit.

@erinbaderin: great idea - pharmacist said refrigeration is optional but we put it in the fridge anyway after we gave LO her first dose last night. So it'll be nice and cold for the next dose tonight. Hopefully it helps!

Thanks so much for all these tips! LO has never had ice cream so we decided to give her a spoon to make sure she would eat it before mixing her precious meds in it. Guess what? She tasted it and wouldn't eat any more! What child doesn't like ICE CREAM?!?! It's good old fashioned vanilla ice cream! This is also the girl who would not eat her birthday cake. But she loves salmon, avocado, blueberries, grapes and chicken... Our little granola girl, I guess. Will have to try juice! And chocolate milk!

I wasn't able to take Tamiflu myself because by the time I was diagnosed I had had symptoms for four days. Studies have shown that Tamiflu only helps if you take it within 24-48 or so hours of symptom onset (or prior to symptom onset when it is prescribed as a preventative as in this scenario with my LO). Thankfully I turned the corner yesterday and can now function. Keeping my fingers firmly crossed for LO - she hasn't been napping well today. :bummed:

Can they flavor it at all? My toddler is pretty good with medicine, but a flavor always makes her think it's a treat.

I'm sorry you have the flu. I had it in 2010 and it kicked my butt until the Tamiflu kicked in.

I've always found my toddler takes medicine better if I store it in the fridge (obviously check with your doctor if this is ok) - I think it dulls the taste and makes them think it's milk or something for a second.

My toddler only takes antibiotics when mixed with chocolate milk. I was super opposed to giving it that way, but my husband insisted on trying it (after many attempts at force feeding it) and it worked like a charm. So now that's what we do. She will take Tylenol by mouth, but antibiotics go in chocolate milk!

Good luck! I hope she doesn't get it and I hope you feel better asap. That sounds awful!

What about something super special she's never had? Chocolate syrup? Ice cream? Give her a plain spoon to feed herself first bite and then offer her second scoop mixed with medicine. Otherwise you need to get both of you, plug her nose, and grab her cheeks really strongly. Like hold her keeping her lips pursed with your grasp. It will prevent her from spitting it out. Put a little bit into the back of her throat, and quickly blow in her face so she swallows.

I mix meds in apple juice. I know they don't recommend it saying that the child won't get the full dose if they don't finish the juice but there's no other way I could get it in my LO. Luckily he would finish the juice for me though. Good luck!! Get well soon!!! And hope your LO is spared.

I have been really sick for four days, including almost two days with a 104 fever, and ended up in the ER yesterday where they tested and confirmed I have their first case of Influenza of the season (in their hospital system). Lucky me - patient zero. I was on a business trip last week so timing works out that I probably got it during travel. :bummed:

What has me terrified is that my 14-month-old has definitely been exposed for days. Until the diagnosis I assumed I was suffering from Hand Foot Mouth disease and that I had caught it from my LO, who had that last week but recovered very quickly. As a result I wasn't careful with hand washing or keeping her from touching my face/nose while she was nursing. :crying:

We were all scheduled to get our flu shots next week at our pediatrician's weekend shot clinic. So frustrating! A lesson to everyone who reads this to get your flu shots as early in the season as possible. I have never in my life been in so much pain or been so afraid I might die. And now I am sick with fear for my LO.

To try to prevent LO from getting it despite exposure to me during the worst of my contagious period our pediatrician prescribed Tamiflu today and we got it tonight. We gave it to LO after dinner (recommended to give with a full stomach or else it can cause nausea/vomiting). We got most of the dose in her eventually by squirting a bit as she nursed and trying to sneak it that way but she figured that out and quit nursing and started freaking out.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on giving tamiflu to a toddler? The dose is 5ml, so it's way more than the small doses of Tylenol we have ever given her. She HATES medicine of any kind and struggled mightily the second she sees the syringe. I am so terrified that I have given my baby a super nasty flu, I will do anything to keep her healthy at this point, so the stakes feel very high!

The pharmacist recommended mixing it with applesauce but our LO refuses all purées. She only eats solids now and we can't think of anything she eats that we could hide a nasty liquid in.

Also any success stories with Tamiflu appreciated! I am not by nature a nervous parent but the idea of my baby dealing with the insane virus I've been battling this week terrifies me beyond belief. Plus I have influenza B, which is apparently the most deadly to infants/children. :crying:
