You are NOT a bad mom. Actually, I think you're quite a GOOD mom for checking the ingredients first. :-) Our pedi recommended D-Vi-Sol with just the Vitamin D since DS was mostly fed breastmilk (and moms tend to be low on vitamin D).
DS had the WORST BMs after being on it, so we decided it bothered his belly. When I looked it up more, there were lots of other babies that got bothered by it too. Plus, it was really expensive with our insurance.
We ended up doing these Carlson Lab Vitamin D drops. One bottle lasted about 6 months because you literally just put one drop on the pacifier or bottle for them. http://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Labs-Natural-Vitamin-Drops/dp/B003BVIBMO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1377806615&sr=8-5&keywords=baby+vitamin+d
We did them pretty regularly for about 6 months then forgot most of the time. At his 12 mo apt. they checked his Vitamin D and it was fine. :)

Okay, I ordered the vitamin D supplements and we're just going to give those to him. I imagine if he was *low* in any other vitamins, he would have told us that was the reason for giving him the iron, etc. But do they even test his levels after he's born?

No way. We live in the NW and did some vit D drops, but that's it. Breast milk has vitamins in it that are more easily broken down- no need to add more.

We just gave our EBF baby Carlson's Vitamin D drops. We lived in Seattle, and it's pretty much a non negotiable there. I think tri vi sol sends a bad message to breast feeding moms that their milk is not enough. I start supplementing breast fed babies at 6 months when their liver iron stores are depleted.

I am really surprised how many give their newborns vitamins. I guess because I live in Florida we don't really worry about vit D much. I trust that my breastmilk is enough for my LO.

We were told to do vitamin D, which we did regularly (Enfamil brand) by putting it in a bottle of pumped milk (I EBF but DH would give him a bottle probably at least once a day, and then once I went back to work).
I was told that Vit D is one of the vitamins that does NOT transmit through breast milk and is important for their development. I did not go through med school, and I like and respect my pediatrician, so I happily went along with her recommendation. She did say, though, that sun exposure would also be a good way of absorbing vitamin D, but you mommas with winter babies should probably all be listening to your ped and administering the Vit D, unless you're lucky and live in Southern California or something. :)

we were told about vitamin d drops at our 2 month appt too. i forget to give them to her, but we live in so cal and she gets sun!

as far as the iron, babies are born with a 6-month supply of iron. i believe it's after that you want to be giving them food with iron.

Our pediatrician's never told us to give vitamins, except probiotics. I was upset when I found out so many HB'ers gave their LOs Vitamin D and our peds never said anything about. But honestly, I bought the Carlson drops, but haven't given her any yet, since we're in sunny SoCal! I think maybe when it's cold/rainy and we don't go out as much. Don't worry!

We were told to just give Vitamin D drops. The pediatrician told us whenever during the day. Also said that most parents forget on a daily basis and it is fine. Just to try and remember. We usually do first thing in the morning while changing her diaper. She loves them though and smacks her lips every time.

I gave Tri Vi Sol to my LO and we had no issues. I bought more for my baby but I only give it to her when I remember...maybe twice a week? I bought a Carlson's Drop but my toddler hid it and I wasn't a fan of the one drop bottle so I didn't buy another one.

I wasn't down with tri-vi-sol. I did give carlsons vitamin d drops in the fall/winter and it's just a lil drop so it's much easier to go down. There shouldn't be much worry about iron as a newborn, usually they don't say anything until they start solids and even then I waited until LO was tested. I have really high iron and she does too so we never needed them.

They didn't give me grief about giving Carlson's instead but if they did both my husband and I know what the AAP recommendations are so we were fine with supporting our decision if challenged.

Okay, I think I'm going to order the Carlson's drops off of Amazon and at least give him the vitamin D. It looks like the AAP recommends it, but not the others?

Testing to see if he was deficient isn't something they would do before releasing us from the hospital is it? Either way, some one would have mentioned it I would think.

Did anyone get grief from the doctor if you were originally told to give the Tri-Vi-Sol but decided not to?

We were told to give them to her but I never did. At her next appt after the dr told us to start them she asked how it was going and I told her I didn't give them to her. That was that. Babies have been EBF forever and I doubt back in the day they were giving them vitamins in addition. I took vitamin D myself so I didn't worry about it.

I'm wondering why your doctor prescribed vitamins at such a young age without seeing if LO is deficient.

I asked my ped about Vit D because we live in a city where a lot of adults are Vit D deficient. He didn't felt it was necessary yet until she was older and only after we test to see if she's low.

I just put a drop on my nipple before I feed her. I don't think there's a taste, if so she's never reacted.

Also, if you are looking at baby tylenol and benadryl, I've found a few pharmacy brands that are dye free. I think Rite-Aid is the one we have.

Honestly, we didn't ever give it to her. I was told by my ped that I could take vitamin D, and give her a little bit of sunshine and that would be all that she needed. She's 15m and survived the EBF phase...so I don't think it's life or death ;) No need to beat yourself up!!

Like you, I would have wondered about the additional things in the product. But I know many people who gave the all natural Vit D drops if they were worried about that buy still wanted to give the baby the supplement.

Like some pps, we weren't told about the Tri-Vi-Sol until his 2-month appointment. We went with Carlson's...it's just the Vit D drop suspended in coconut oil (I think). I would let it drip onto my nipple right before I nursed him. I also made sure to get us outside for a little bit every time it was sunny out (which was a great mood booster for me as well!)

But to be honest, I was never very good about giving it to him. Maybe 2-3 days a week I'd remember. And I can't tell you the last time I gave it to him (but we're outside A LOT these days), and my kid is in perfect health.

We give Xander Tri-Vi-Sol! But I don't know about the extra iron - my pediatrician never mentioned that. And I'm TERRIBLE at remembering to give it to him... I think a month's supply lasted me six months. Oops!

I always give it to Xander right before I feed him - if I give it to him after, he's more likely to spit it out. And I try to inject it slowly into his mouth, so he has time to swallow. If I give him the whole 1mL at once, he just lets most of it fall out of his mouth!

My ped only had us do Vitamin D drops, and even then he only had us do it because we had a winter baby. He said that for spring and summer babies he doesn't even recommend that because they get enough sun not to worry. That being said, my LO drank the vitamins down no problem (despite having only ever had breastmilk).

You are not a bad mom! I didn't know about it either.

My ped said it was just Vit D that he needed. Since he was born in Oct, we just gave him the Enfamil D vi sol during the winter months. Even then we weren't very consistent with it. After 6 months is when iron stores begin to deplete. At his 9 month check up, his iron was on the lower side so we began giving him poly-vi-sol w/ iron. I think his iron was on the lower side since he doesn't eat a lot of solids. we just had another blood test, and all is fine!

When my LOs were newborns, we gave them Enfamil D Vi Sol. After four months (I think), our ped had us switch to Enfamil Poly Vi Sol. The D Vi Sol doesn't taste bad, so I think babies don't have an issue with it. Poly Vi Sol is another story, though!

Our ped never said anything about waiting a certain amount of time after eating to give them vitamins, or afterwards though ...

If you're anxious about that product, we used Vitacost drops which is just vitamin D in olive oil. You use 1 drop on a paci, bottle, direct in mouth, or even on your nipple before breastfeeding.
