My LO is 8.5 months old and we've been BLW since she was 6 months. I've been avoiding anything acidic (like citrus), peanuts, and honey. Otherwise everything is fair game. We'll hold off on straight cow's milk until after a year, but she's had cheese and yogurt (plain, full fat). We have no history of allergies on either side, so I'm not really doing the 3 day wait.

My pediatrician has no idea what BLW is, so he's not really that helpful. We're kind of winging it, with a lot of help from the Rapley BLW book and http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/.

that list is pretty conservative. olive has had everything on that list except honey and nuts, sammyfab's list is more in line with what most parents follow.

Yeah, it can be so confusing! I've always known to start with rice cereal and then slowly introduce one new food at a time and for 3-4 days to watch for allergies. If not, then move on to the next one. Anabel Karmel has a great first foods book that I used with my first son and it was great. I plan on using it for my second in a couple of months. And if I have any concerns I always ask my sons' pediatrician.

@Mrsdaredevil: blueberries are fine around 7 months I think. BE forewarned though, if they eat a lot, their poo can turn black. Literally black lol. Liv ate an entire carton of them over a day (she loves her blueberries) and her first morning poo was BLACK black and I freaked out. Its normal lol

With the wait time between new foods we took things slow. We tried to start with avocado but she didn't like it (and still doesn't) so we ended up with rice cereal.

Around 6 months we started adding a new fruit/veggie each week. We did a lot of squash and carrots.

By 9 months we started on some other things like meat, cheese, yogurt, etc.

@Coco Bee: did you get peaches? :D
I think blueberries is more for eating whole because it's so small they can choke on it.
We have allergies on both sides of the family so I will be extra cautious.

I think every ped is going to give different recommendations. I plan to take the advice of my pediatrician and make our own educated decisions.

@Sammyfab: did you give each item 4 days? I'm curious how you were able to introduce so much in a month!

We just had our 6 month appt yesterday and the doc said no honey, egg whites, nuts or cow's milk before one year. Everything else can be introduced gradually.

My LO turned 6 months last Saturday. We started solids very slowly at 5 months and to-date he has had: avocado, butternut squash, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, pears, applesauce, bananas, yogurt, mangoes, and a garden greens mix from a pouch. We started giving each food individually and then just mixed them up if we knew he really liked something and was having a hard time with a new taste.

That list is very restrictive, CocoBee. The only thing that my son didn't eat before 1 year was honey, because of the botulism risk. By 1 year, he had eaten everything else on that list with no issues...except for the strawberries, those did cause a little redness, so we didn't do those again.

As for other berries, we never pureed them, but offered them in oatmeal, my son loves them that way.

@Mrs. Yoyo: @skibobrown: Really?! See I thought that the wholesome baby seemed more conservative than the list I got. They have many fruits/veggies on there that they say not to give until 10-12 mos... Like broccoli. I was going to give some to ds off my plate tonight and I saw it said 10 mos.
@Mrsdaredevil: I heard that berries should be given later than 6 months.,, but in the store many purees are made with blueberries and other fruits like Sweet t said.. I guess just try some and see how she reacts. If it's negative, just use blueberry purees in your smoothies or oatmeal :)

@Mrsdaredevil: Yum! I would definitely use them. I have heard that some babies get a diaper rash if they've eaten too much of them, so I would probably look out for that. Otherwise, I don't think it's a problem. I tried blueberries for the first time using a store bought baby food. I didn't want to make a huge batch if LO had a tolerance issue. I have noticed that blueberries are usually mixed with apples or bananas. I'm assuming they probably come out pretty thin as a puree.

Hmm... that sounds like a crazy list. We're planning on doing at least some baby led weaning, and a lot of those ingredients are in the BLW cookbook. The only things I was really planning on staying away from before 1 year were cow's milk (for drinking) and honey. We'll see what our new doctor thinks of that idea...

DH's brother has an anaphylactic egg allergy, so we will be avoiding eggs for a long time I think.

Other than the high-allergen foods, I think I am going to take a laid back semi-BLW approach to the food. I will start with our garden veggies first, with some rice cereal, some purees, some in soft/steamed fingers and go from there. I think all the conflicting info goes to show you that you just have to go with your gut!

Our doc also gave us a general guideline, but LO had dairy (except for milk), wheat and citrus by 10 months. The rest of the things on your list we gave at 12 months. This might be kind of gross, but if you don't puree, you will be able to see pieces in the poop, and you can tell what isn't being digested.

We did avocado for DS's very first food. Early on he had a lot of the safe options...apples, bananas, pears, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, etc. After that, we just kind of chose things that we were comfortable with and weren't on the major don't have lists. We used wholesome baby food and our baby bullet cook book but just as guidelines.

DS, now 11.5 months, has been eating yogurt since he was 7 or 8 months old. He's also had cheese and eggs. I remember reading that the no dairy rule is to prevent parents from over indulging their LOs on milk instead of formula/breastmilk. I'll have to see if I can remember where I read it though. Like I said, we've done yogurt & cheese for a while. Just like anything else, we used the 3 day rule to rule out any allergies. We do avoid strawberries, honey, chocolate, shellfish, & nuts.

@JennyD: there are no allergies in mine or DH's family so I'm not too worried about it either. But like you said, I want to avoid an illness and foods that aren't easily digested by babies (like cows milk). I'm avoiding wheat because we don't eat wheat and I've heard a lot of studies on how it's not easily digested until later on. Since we don't eat much of it, that's not an issue.

The one issue with him eating what we eat is that we make a lot of food with almond flour... he won't be able to have that until he's 3!

They said no strawberries, eggs, honey, nuts, shellfish, cows milk. Anything else is fine, we could start feeding her what we eat, 3 meals a day. No need to start with baby cereal. But I still did start with brown rice cereal, one meal a day, and added homemade pureed veggies and fruits.

I feel your pain. I finally gave up. I'm not super worried about allergies, so we're avoiding foods with a high potential for food poisoning or similar sicknesses (honey/botulism). And that's it. I fed baby (7 months) strawberry yogurt last night. My mom fed her chocolate cheerios about a month ago (I was not impressed). Although I have one friend who is SUPER militant about what her babies/kids eat (ie no fruit until they can eat it whole!!!), most of my friends just break off little bits of whatever they're eating or blend/mash up their dinner...

Good luck!

Every doctor is different. Liv had Greek yogurt at 7 months old and has been eating strawberries, eggs, and wheat since she was anywhere from 6-7 months old. He had us avoid milk (yuuuuck) and nuts/nut butters, shellfish, and honey until later. We did baby led weaning, so from 6.5 months when we started solids she had just about anything we did.

Every book I read, site I go to and person I talk to has different ideas on what a baby's first foods should and shouldn't be. I've gotten so much conflicting information that I've kept Cobi's foods limited to a few "safe" options.

I went to Wholesome Baby Food - http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/here/FoodChartbyFood.pdf - and they have conflicting information with what I read in my Start Fresh Book.

In my Start Fresh book it says at 6 months I can give him banana and spinach pureed together, but wholesome baby says 8-10 months.

Some sites say babies can't digest grain cereals, some say oatmeal is okay..

I am SO CONFUSED.

I finally asked Cobi's dr at his appt the other day and she said it's more about what he *can't* eat.

This is the list of foods to avoid until they're a year old (from my dr):
Any dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese)
Nuts + nut butter, including almond flour
Eggs
Seafood
Strawberries
Citrus (oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes)
Wheat (bread, crackers and teething cookies and cereals)
Honey

The papers she gave me recommend starting with: mashed beans, sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, and applesauce. As well as mashed up food of what we eat.

How did you decide what would be your LO's first foods? What were their first foods?

So far, Cobi has had bananas, pears, applesauce, peas, carrots and avocados.
