@blushink: I told DH that even though our baby isn't here yet, I'm still a mom and get to celebrate Mother's day!

For us, we bought DH's mom a plant and he delivered it on Saturday (it was a dual Mother's Day/B-day gift since her b-day was yesterday too). And we currently live with my parents (38 days til we can move into our new house!) so I made everyone brunch. But usually we do something small - like a phone call or card.

This year, we went to my MIL's the night before and made her dinner. Then, day-of, we went to church and the park and my husband cleaned my car for me as my Mother's Day treat, and then we went to my mom's for pizza and ice cream. So, we try to celebrate all the moms. I also helped my LO make cards for her grandmas, and we give them cards from us as well.

Oh, and I make my husband take a picture of me with my LO every Mother's Day. This was my third and it's fun to look at her growing (and this year was especially funny since I'm hugely pregnant and it's my last Mother's Day as a mom of one.)

With my mom and MIL, we always do a card, flowers, a gift, and dinner. But now that I'm a mother, I thought *I* would be celebrated as well...My brother said, "It's YOUR mother's day...Not *A* mother's day." I punched him.

Agree with chopsuey, I think it's a celebration of all moms in our life!

I think my mom's and MIL's expectations of future mother's day celebrations are minimal anyway. MIL mentioned at dinner yesterday that she doesn't need the flowers we got her yesterday next year~

We will always do card/flowers/knick knack gifts from LOs for the grandmothers, but I think it'll be more "our family" focused. Same goes for Father's day.

I still see it more as my mom's day.

Prebaby we'd go to dinner with mil the day before mother's day so restaurants aren't so crowded, and we'd have a BBQ at my sil or mom's on mother's day. This year I didn't really get to celebrate myself because dh was. In the hospital, but next year we'll probably do mother's day brunch as just our little family, and we'll still do dinners with our moms.

Seeing my family is in town we do mothers day at my mom (with my stepmom there) and we always highlight me and my sister being moms too.

We usually go see our MIL the Saturday of mothers day weekend. As for celebrating me, hubs clearly needs help on this front. I wasn't expecting a gift but he didn't even wish me happy mothers day. Seeing its my second, I'm not at sad about it then my first...

In my mind, mother's day is mostly done by the kids, with some help from dad.
Of course... my mom doesn't care at all about mother's day, and when my brother and I were preteens/teens we used to sneak in a fake mother's day before or after the real one, and take her out for a meal. We didn;t do it on "real" mother's day so she wouldn't find out.
Sometimes, now, I just call, or get her flowers

If we lived close to my mom or MIL, we would go to visit. I feel like it is primarily their day. They don't send me cards or give me presents. I guess our families subscribe to more of the "respect your elders" philosophy.

Good question. I feel that once you have a family of your own, you shouldn't be expected to go visit your mom if she lives out of town. If she is in town, I think it would be nice to do breakfast, lunch or church with her. I know once our lo is here, we probably will stay home for mother's day and visit at other times of the year.

Now that Mother's Day has passed, I have to confess: I'm a little confused about who's supposed to celebrate whom.

Do you primarily celebrate it for your own Mom/MIL (like how it was before you had a baby) or does the focus change to you once you have a baby? I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's common for husbands to shift the focus on their wives on Mother's Day or or is it just an add-on to their own Mother's celebrations?

Do you expect your husband to celebrate you (the mother of his children) or his own mother or both? Who has priority?

I'm asking because it's been tradition to celebrate Mother's Day at my MIL's house. Am I supposed to resume tradition once our LO is born? Or will she always have this holiday until my babies are old enough to throw something for me?

As for my own Mom, I send her a card and a gift (she lives far away). But even if she lived close-by, she wouldn't expect us to visit her on the day of. She's already congratulated me on Mother's Day and the LO isn't even here yet. She's a lot more understanding when it comes to these things, so it's not an issue with her.

How do you do it? Who gets dibs on Mother's Day? Or do you have one big celebration and share it together?
