@Weagle: ok, that makes me feel better! i do feel pressure to try and figure out why she isn't doing 12 hours at night, since so many things i read say "12 hour night and 12 hour day" blahh

@edelweiss: aww sorry about daycare naps, i stress about naps when i am not home with her (i work part time) as well. well according to your pedi she is getting enough sleep, thanks! i will have to ask ours at out next appt and see what he says

@Mrs. Bee: its crazy how different the averages are for babies! esp charlie and olive, so different! we JUST made the transition to 2 naps a day, so I let her sleep for as long as she likes during those so she isn't overtired for bedtime. But maybe once she is used to 2 naps, I can start cutting them a bit.

@BKCaribBaby: hmm that chart is interesting, looks like we are within the normal sleep averages, but we could never do 8-10pm for bedtime, she would be so tired by then! hmm but maybe she would sleep in longer that way?

Charlie slept 10 at night for a very long time until we reduced his naps and he started sleeping more at night. Olive can sleep over 14 hours at night even now. Sleep needs are different for every child, but 14-15 hours is a good place for your lo's age!

DS is 8 months old, and usually sleeps anywhere between 9-10 hours at night and has about two 1-2 hour naps during the day. So around 11-14 hours in a 24 hour period.

@edelweiss: when my son started daycare at 4 months, he slept awfully! At around 6 months I noticed his naps were getting more consistent and now, at 8 months, he'll sleep for 1-2 hour naps regularly. Hang in there, I think they just need time :)

LO is 4 months and gets 11-12 hours at night. naps are a crapshoot--at daycare he gets only about 1, maybe 2 hours total (which leads me to practically throw him into the crib as soon as i bring him home because he's so tired). on weekends he has about 4 hours of naps.

i was really stressed about his sleep, particularly after daycare, but i had seen somewhere that he should be getting 15-16 hours of sleep. but my pediatrician said 14 hours total. so now i just think there's no definitive answer, and as long as LO is healthy and growing, i should try not to worry about it too much (although i really, really, desperately wish that he slept better at daycare).

My son is 8 months and has the same bedtime/wake times as your daughter. His daytime nap total is usually around 2 to 2.5 hours though. He is generally very happy and we put him to sleep when he seems tired, so I'm not too worried about his total being in the low end.

I think your girl is getting enough sleep :)

It sounds like she's getting adequate sleep. I know a lot of "experts" say 12 hours at night, but I think that puts undue pressure on the parents and child. After polling a lot of my mommy friends (and I have a lot of them) very few of their kids under 1.5-2 sleep 12 hours straight. The ones that do have always been extra sleepy babies.

I think it's the total daily sleep that matters. My 14-month old gets ~12 hours per night plus a 1.5-2 hour nap each day. On average I'd say she gets 13-15 hours per day, depending on the day.

I am sooo confused about the recommended sleep requirements for babies. Some books and sources say 11-12 hours at night (like Weissbluth and Baby Whisperer) but then other sources say 9-10 hours at night (Ferber). I am trying to figure out if my LO needs more sleep or if I am trying to make her sleep longer than she needs/requires? She goes down around 7/7:30pm and wakes up around 5:45/6am, with 1 feed in there. How many hours of overnight sleep does your LO get and how many hours of naps per day?

DD is almost 7 months and gets around 10.5 hours at night and she typically has 2 naps (2 1/2 hrs and 1 1/2 hrs for a total of 4 hours during the day. Total daily sleep around 14-15 hours.
