My pediatrician addressed this at our last appt when we talked about solids. She said hard-boiled egg YOLKS are a great first food - but don't give egg white as it can be an allergen. Technically runny yolks would be okay, except that it's basically impossible to completely separate yolk and white unless it's hard-boiled.

I gave my LO eggs early too, I read an article that said 9 months and on was OK, she loves them, too. She had had hard boiled and also scrambled.

When we went for her last MD visit the MD said no eggs until after one, so I didn't even bother telling him that the ship has sailed.

Be careful with bakery bread if your LO is allergic to egg whites! It's sometimes painted with egg whites to make it look yummier...

@artbee: challah is delicious! She probably loves it and it's a great way to give her early exposure to those proteins!

Actually, most bread (unless it's challah or an egg roll or something) doesn't have eggs. My husband likes to bake. :)

@Mrs. Jacks: I give LO challah which is egg bread. I didn't even think about it before. Oops. But you made me feel better. She's been eating it for awhile and no issues.

I have a cousin who has a fatal egg allergy so I was planning to be very careful about introducing eggs but I never thought of all the things that have eggs in them...

So first of all, the data on eggs is outdated. There is a nice 2010 article that looked at lots of kids and the ones who had eggs earlier were less likely to be egg allergic. Here's the article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20920771

Second, eggs are not in all bread, but cooked proteins are more denatured (or broken down).

That's why when I introduced milk I started with cooked milk, then cheese, then yogurt than milk... because the proteins are more denatured the more cooked they are.

@Rubies: Yeah I've heard the whites are the dangerous part, not because of not being cooked through but because of allergies. But egg whites are in things like bread so I'm confused to how that's ok.

LO's doctor said that hard-boiled yolks are perfectly fine and even the whites *should* be okay, too, as long as they are absolutely cooked through (ie. hard-boiled). I haven't been brave enough to give her the whites, yet, but I have given her the yolks with no reaction.

Everything I read says no eggs for babies under one. But everything also says that bread is ok. Aren't eggs in bread?
