I have to admit to stopping fortification without checking with my pediatrician because we were mid move and I couldn't get an appointment and it became clear to me that LO was dairy allergic and the fortification was a problem. All this to say that when I did get into the new pediatrician LO was still gaining great on unfortified breastmilk and she said Mama made the right call. We had a doctor who never remembered to use an adjusted chart. Drove. Me. Nuts.

@BabyMats: @SweetCaroline: @catomd00: Thank you for the input, it's reassuring! I really do think they're blowing this out of proportion and she's fine. Hopefully we'll be nursing full-time soon, and if that happens I'm not giving her bottles just so it can be fortified.

Didn't have a premie but my daughter gains about a pound a month and that has been consistent from birth. She was born just under 7lbs and 9.5 lbs at 2 months. Doctor was never concerned. Mama knows best, listen to your gut. I always felt if she was gaining, having dirty diapers, happy and meeting milestones we were good to go! That mindset hasn't failed me yet.

I can't weigh in on the preemie situation, but I can share my experience. We had to fortify DD's breastmilk as well to 24 cals/oz. Finally, they just decided she is a "long, thin, petite baby". THANK YOU! Our doctor said as long as she is maintaining HER curve, no need to worry--even if the curve is not on the chart.

Since your DD is jumping up curves, dang it sounds like she's doing fantastic! My DD was an 8 pounder at birth, but is now 7 months and 14 pounds. She was VERY slow to gain weight the first 5 months.

Gosh, I just remember feeling so worried and terrible, I don't want you to feel that way. The growth charts most peds use are based on formula fed babies, as it looks like you have discovered.

@Torchwood: that sounds great. My twins were 30 weekers. And their ped had their preemie chart to track their growth and compares that to the full-term chart. Just to show they are on track and will eventually get onto the other chart not to put any pressure for them to gain more weight.. They are ebf. No shows of concern at all for their growth. They go by their adjusted age for growth with their ped.
You are doing a great job! 9.5lbs sounds awesome!

@MamaCate: Based on that calculator she's either 10% or 65%, both of which seem good to me.

@QBbride: That makes me feel better.

@twodoghouse: I met with an IBCLC, so I think I'll email her.

I can't speak to the preemie angle, but my twins were small (4lb15 and 5lb15) so i supplemented with 24 cal/oz formula in addition to nursing. Our dr wanted us to use the 24 cal/oz formula until my kids reached the 10th percentile (which ended up being ~6 months or so). I have no idea if that was an arbitrary % or was important for some other reason? Are you working with an LC? Maybe she can give you a 2nd opinion on L's weight gain and where you should go from here for supplementing.

@Torchwood: I am not totally sure how to read the charts but here is a calculator you could play with:
http://www.infantchart.com/cdc0to3weightforage.php

It is my understanding that preemies should be measured for actual and adjusted age for at least the first year. Can you clarify with your doc?

Because she was a preemie, they should be using her adjusted age to track her growth. I use the iPhone app Growth and you can put in their due date and use that instead.

My DD wasn't a preemie and she weighs a bit less than yours and she is 2 months old. Nobody seems concerned about her weight. I think almost 10lbs at 1 month adjusted sounds great!!

@Kemma: She's completely happy, growing out of clothes quickly, and hitting milestones, so...? I really don't see any cause for concern.

I'm not sure about the growth charts but I do know that an ebf baby should be gaining an average of 3-7 ounces per week which kind of hives you a starting point to work from.

I'd also imagine that as long as your wee babe is gaining well, looking well and meeting milestones then you're all good!

Liliana had her 2 month appointment yesterday. Theyre having us keep fortifying her milk (I still EP because she's a crap nurser) with a little formula (still just a teaspoon per 6oz, so not much), but she's gone up what seems like plenty on her growth. She went from off the chart to 5th percentile. Which doesn't sound like much, but they're comparing her to normal 2 month olds and she's only a month adjusted. I'm really confused that they're concerned. I asked, but they blew me off. Do you normally compare preemies directly to full term babies?

I really don't buy that her growth isn't on track. Can someone look at this chart and see if I'm just reading it wrong? She's 9lb13oz and 2.5 months, 1 adjusted.

This is the WHO chart for breastfed babies. I'm wondering if they're using one that's for formula babies (or both), on top of using what I would think is the wrong age. But maybe I'm just crazy. Anyone have any input?
