@Goldengirl: i literally buy nothing in newborn size except one thing for a photoshoot. I received a couple of outfits in that size as gifts. I usualy just skip to 0-3 months and then 3-6 month sizes. this is because they dont stay in the newborn size for very long at all. Also it is easier to change them in that stage if the oneses are a little bigger.

@Smurfette: I just hope the one that's shorter is still the standard size, and the other one is just too long and not the other way around!

@snowjewelz: You expect it more from different brands. But the same store. I only noticed yesterday when I showed DH what all I bought new for the baby. Which is too much of course :)

@Smurfette:  Haha see?!

I was sorting DD's fall clothes earlier on, and I basically took a pair of pants that's perfect length on her, and just compared all 18m/24m/2T stuff I have and guess what, there are pants from all 3 sizes that fit!

@snowjewelz: I bought two new newborn sleepers on Sat. Both from Carter's, one is a zipper and one a snap. But the snap one is like an inch bigger. WTF?

- How many things should I actually get in "newborn" size?

I'd get enough for 1 laundry cycle (depending on how often you want/plan to wash stuff). For me, DD wasn't a big baby, so we ended up buying a little more NB size afterwards since I didn't like her swimming in 3 months either.

-For the newborn size/tiny stuff, is it best just to stick to onesies and sleepers and avoid pants/leggings/shirts/separates? Does anyone use that stuff at the beginning, or should I get those only in 0-3?

I'd say yes! As first time parents, it was terrifying to maneuver her limbs and head/neck, so we actually just stuck to sleepers! We had a winter baby so if it was cold we suck her in a fleece sleeper. It took us a while to get comfortable with other clothes!

-Socks! How many? And are booties necessary too (for being outside/winter baby)?

Not for us, since we mostly put her in sleepers that have the feety part

-Hats! Is just one simple warm hat for going outside good enough, or do I need those packs of the cute little cotton hats/beanies that I see everywhere? Are hats used indoors?

She was quite bald so we always had a hat on her in/outdoors (also being a winter baby).

-Any must-haves to get through the first little bit without having to run out and get more things? Any major regrets of stuff you got that you never ended up using?

This one is really hard to say; every baby/parent are different. I like to be over-prepared, so I rather had a lot of things sitting at home (un-opened) and I could just return later on if I didn't end up using it. And getting stuff you suddenly need isn't that hard; I have Amazon Prime and also sending someone out to Target (or going by myself for a quick break) is easy!

-I've also noticed that the sizing is hard to figure out. I have one Carter's newborn sleeper that I bought, and one 6-month one that's a hand-me-down. I held them up and they're the exact same size. Do they shrink a ton and in that case, are newborn sizes completely useless? I'm scared to wash the one I bought and have it come out of the dryer doll-size.

Clothing sizes are definitely very inconsistent sometimes! I also got a lot of hand me downs that shrunk with time that DD could fit into earlier vs. new clothes. I spent a lot of time prepping season by season, holding up different clothes to see if they are the same size regardless of what's on the label.

@Cole: yes this. If I have a second kid I'm going to go the gently used route for almost everything. I didn't start buying off of our local b/s/t until lo was 7 months or so. I wish I had started sooner especially for clothes and all of the short-lived activity stuff like swings, jumpers, , bouncers. I wish I would have gotten over myself and my thinking that she "needed" new stuff... wrong!

I haven't seen anyone mention them yet but I liked having a couple of those gowns for nighttime in newborn sizes. We were so sleep deprived and these were the easiest option for us for middle of the night diaper changes. Snaps are a pain but it means you can keep the top of baby covered and zippers are easier but baby's top half is exposed and they lose so much body heat unless you have a onesie on them which we never did.

I loved the H&M kimono onesies, they are organic cotton and nice and thick.

Also, try consignment sales/stores or local bst pages for newborn and 0-3 month stuff especially. Everyone buys stuff they never use and even the stuff you use is used so sparingly that it's super easy to get cheap stuff in great shape.

I only have 1 so I'm not an expert or anything, lol. My baby was 7 lb 9 oz. He primarily wore those side snap long sleeve kimono style shirts, a diaper, and then we'd just wrap him in a blanket. He was also born in August in Florida and we keep it pretty warm in our house.

For going out, onesies + socks + light blanket (A&A swaddle blanket) over the legs in the carseat. I got some onesies that snap down the front which were awesome.

I did use the NB size onesies and kimono shirts, so I'm glad I had them. He didn't wear them too long, but 0-3 month stuff would have been way too big.

My baby had nightmare reflux and protein intolerance and was having huge spit ups like 20-30x a day from day one, so at home we just left him in a diaper with a blanket and kept our house warm. Otherwise I would have been changing his clothes like 15 times a day (and he was too little for bibs). So he never really wore sleepers as a newborn because of all the vomiting.

I was expecting a big baby, so I didn't buy many newborn things and I ended up delivering a full term 7.5 pounder that swam in what I had. My husband had to go out shopping while I was in the hospital and again when we got home, so I don't recommend that, unless you don't care what he's going to bring home (internet shopping wasn't widely available in the country where my son was born).

I bought 2 piece outfits and one piece pjs. I pretty much mostly used the one piece pjs until she was a few months old. I also learned the hard way that the its super frustrating and annoying to have to match up all the buttons on the one piece pjs every 2 hours in the middle of the night in the dark for diaper changes, its all anout the zippered pjs!

I bought a crap ton of tiny onesies but ended up hating them. Pulling clothing over a floppy newborn's head? Not easy or fun. Plus snap frustration with constant diaper changes. We used sleepers a lot, and I mostly hated those too (hard to check the diaper when dressed in those).

Next time I'm sticking to side-snap tops. I really liked those for easy dressing and diaper changes. They make long sleeved ones with fold over mittens as well as the short sleeved ones.

Baby will likely spend a lot of time swaddled or in a sleep sack, but when it isn't, we will do booties and/or footie pants.

We had a February baby and she only wore a hat when we went out in the cold. The cotton hats were never worn! The hospital told us not to let the baby sleep in a hat after going home.

and just remember, Amazon is your friend! Without fail you can get something delivered to you if you find a product that you need more of or can't live without.

I decided I hated snaps/buttons. All of those cute sleepers that button up the front...ugh. When you're going through diapers every 2 hours, thats a LOT of snaps. She pretty much lived in zip sleepers.

oh and my MVP zip sleeper for all age ranges (she's still in them now at 18 months) is Bonds, an Australian company. All of their smaller size (under 12 month) sleepers have built in mitten cuffs for the hands AND feet, and two way zippers. Not to mention they are cute as heck, wash SO well, and the exchange rate from AUD to USD makes them cheaper than gap.

In the early months I found myself getting really neurotic about sleep temps too. I had to remind myself there is a range of good temps, not one specific magic one. I was scared of overheating, but my baby sleeps better when warm. I've found it a good guideline to make sure he is sleeping in as many layers as I am. For example:

70F: zippered footie pjs and a swaddle / sleep sack
74F: a onesie and zippered footie pjs
78F: zippered footie pjs

That's a lot more clothing than is what is suggested often on HB but it works for us.

I had an early November baby and really liked kimono style onsies and pants for daytime and then zippered cotton footed sleepers. I also got a few cotton top knot hats from etsy and then a thicker winter hat for outside. I never put anything on his hands bc the lactation consultant we saw in the hospital said that newborns need their hands to feel around while nursing and he also used his to self-soothe very early on. We filed his nails to prevent scratches. Much easier than trimming

@Mrs. Goose: Thanks, this is so helpful! I guess we'll just have to try a bunch of things and see what works. Unfortunately because we rent, we don't have control over the heating/temperature so might have to crack windows as needed if the heat is blasting. I'm sure I'll spend the first few weeks just constantly trying to get the right temp!

@Goldengirl: she was permanently in the onesie tshirt underneath a footed sleeper and then in a sleep sack (2.5 tog rating). Our room was around 21 Celsius according to our baby monitor and thermostat. I was always concerned about being too warm and I would constantly feel the back of her neck to see how warm she felt and her forehead. Her hands would be little ice cubes, but the rest of her would stay warm, but not too hot. I never used a swaddle so her arms and hands were always out which probably made her a little bit cooler. Once they start rolling over and sleep on their tummies they are warmer and more cosy. She was never sweaty and I just skipped the hat after the first week or two because it made me worried even though it was thin (which I know is a no no for sleep), but at the beginning they are so little and have been in a warm little pool for a long time. So you do what you're comfortable with and what your baby's body seems to need. She slept beside me in her crib for the first 6 months and so I would just put my hand in there and feel her whenever I woke up. Some babies and kids run hot and some run cold. Mine seems to be similar to me and stays warm but doesn't get sweaty at night or anything when sleeping. Definitely always err on the cool side for sleep though!

I compulsively checked the temperature with our baby monitor and the weather outside at night since that would have some impact on the room temperature. I'm only now becoming more relaxed about what I put her in to sleep. For the summer I put her in a long sleeved onesie or a tshirt onesie with no legs/pants and a 0.5 tog sleep sack. 68 degrees/20 Celsius seems to be the sweet spot for baby sleep temperature in my opinion. In the summer I also turned her ceiling fan on to help keep it feeling cooler once she was in her own room even though we keep our house around 21 in summer and winter. Now that night temps are dropping to 46/8 Celsius she is back in footed sleepers (no onesie underneath yet) and her 2.5 tog sleep sack.

It's tricky worrying about their body temp at night. Easy to let yourself get worked up about it being right as you may be able to see from above.

We have a ton of NB clothes and personally, I keep reusing only the items with feet. Mostly my kids have worn sleepers but after the umbilical cord falls off I start putting them in other outfits. Baby socks just fall off so all the cute rompers and pants without feet are kept in the drawer as a last resort.
I like a mix of zip and button sleepers, some onsies (short sleeve for layering when its colder or long sleeve to wear alone if its warm), and outfits with a long sleeve shirt and footed pants. I think just a couple outfits are sufficient and you can never have enough sleepers. If you are worried about baby not fitting in NB size for long, just have a couple items washed and keep the tags on the rest. My youngest is now 8.5 lbs and still mostly in NB size. He is long and skinny so some sleepers are too small but everything else is fine.

@Mrs. Pickle: These are so cute! Although I guess really they are kind of the same thing as sleepers... just without feet? I want one of those for myself to wear!

@ShootingStar: Haha I would totally do the dress thing too if I were having a girl... I almost still want to buy them just because they're so cute!

@Mrs. Goose: Would you layer under the sleeper for sleeping? And was there a sleep sack or swaddle on top of that as well? Even though it will be freezing out, I feel like I'm more worried about it being cool enough in the room because of all the stuff I've read about overheating... which makes me wonder if I'd want to do a bunch of layers at night. That whole thing also confuses me because everything seems to say the baby's room should be about 68, yet layers are good in the winter. If our room is 68 or warmer, do we just dress him for sleeping the same way as we would year-round?

My 8lb3oz baby wore NB for 1 month. My 9lb11oz baby went straight to 0-3 month clothing. I brought a NB and 3 month outfit to the hospital both times.

My boys are summer babies, but I prefer footed one piece sleepers in the beginning. It's hard to put clothing over their heads so kimono style or button down are the best. I like snaps for day and zippers for nighttime.

PS. Janie & Jack has footed one-pieces that zip from the foot to the neck (reverse from most other brands) so baby's chest stays warm during changes.

My spring/summer babies were both around 7.5 lbs at birth and wore NB for around 3 weeks. All they wore was sleepers, we weren't really going out during that time. We were fine with 7 or 8 sleepers.

@Goldengirl: I like one pieces the most. DD wore a lot of rompers and dresses. She wore tops and leggings the least. Personally I don't think diaper changes are any more difficult based on the outfit. However in the middle of the nights snaps are a pain. I greatly preferred zippered footed sleepers.

ETA: here's an example of a romper I would have bought in newborn size (boy and girl version).

Another vote for Zutano fleece booties! Much easier than socks, they stay on and are cozy.

I also had to run out and buy more cotton footie pj's in NB size when he was 4 days old! Well, Nana did  He was 6 lbs 14 oz at birth and didn't graduate to 0-3 size until ~4 wks.
