@highwire: He's 7.5 months! When we first started solids, we only did the "dinner" at 5.5 months. We worked in his breakfast probably around 6.5 months. That's when he started to take in less formula. I think as you add more and more to the solids diet, the milk intake will start to decrease.

When we started solids, we started with breakfast. So, I would mix in breastmilk with his oatmeal and bananas. I kept the same amount of bottles, but as I increased solids, I noticed he was not drinking as much, so I cut down the quantity in 2 of his feedings so he would still take as many bottles as before.

I would wait and see what she wants. My LO would always spit the bottle out when she was full. She had reflux so she was big on the spit up and I asked the doctor about it, they said always feed her when she's hungry no matter how much she is spitting up because only she knows when she's full.

Definitely not an exact science, but LO did start to back off of some bottles once we started him on solids. He gets 8 oz of formula 4 times each day. Our schedule looks like this right now:

7:30am - 1 tblsp of cereal with 1-2 oz of a fruit puree followed immediately by an 8 oz bottle (he will drink anywhere between 5-8 oz of this bottle depending on how hungry he is. He will bat it away when he's finished with it or not open his mouth anymore when he's full)

11:30am - 8 oz bottle

3:30pm - 8 oz bottle

6pm - 1 tblsp of cereal with 2.5 oz of a veggie for dinner

8:30pm - 8 oz bottle before bed

@highwire: ditto @skibobrown. Also, M stopped wanting as much milk/formula as we added in solids. She used to take 3 5oz bottles at daycare. After she was getting 3 solid meals a day, she dropped to drinking just 4oz of each of those bottles. I say, let her tell you what she wants. Our spit-up became practically non-existent after we started solids. I hope the same is for you!

@highwire: Ideally you should keep the same amount of bottles and add the food in gradually. In the beginning I would feed her veggie purees when we got home from daycare

@highwire: to my understanding, you don't lower their bottle intake because that's where most of the nutrients are coming from. K just started solids and eats 2 solids at daycare after two of her 4 4oz bottles. I don't always do solids at home with her during the week unless I'm trying something new to see if she has an allergic reaction to it.

My dd spit up a lot too, but I know she was overeating. She is a boob girl for sure! She can hang out on my boob all day long if I let her! Maybe If you decrease it slowly, that'll work?

I think it depends on what you plan to feed your daughter. I fed my son cheese and yogurt as he got closer to 9 months. I felt since he was getting calcium and protein from those foods, I could cut back on the formula, just by an ounce or two at a time. I really followed his cues though and looked at what he ate over the course of the day to make adjustments.

It's not an exact science, even though I had wished it was!

I didn't really cut out any bottle feedings until 1 year when we transitioned completely to solid food. As DD began eating regular meals though, some of her bottles were transitioned into sippy cups of formula while she ate her meal (she was exclusively formula fed at that age). So before she turned one she usually had 5 servings of formula per day. One in the morning after waking up. One with a mid-morning meal in her sippy cup. One mid-afternoon. One in the evening with her dinner, and one at bedtime. At one year I simply dropped the bottles entirely and would give her milk with each of her meals in her sippy.

I need your advice!

We are about to really start solids. Currently, LO eats half breastmilk and half formula. She'll be 6 months old on the 27th. She drinks about 32-36 oz a day total.

Will we keep with the same amount of formula/breastmilk and just add food indefinitely? Can I back off on some of the formula? She's getting PLENTY to eat. She's a big girl, and she spits up EVERYWHERE. I've wondered if I overfeed her, because the amount of spit up is insane. I've hung out with a lot of other babies since she was born, and her spit up is above and beyond.

That is why I am asking if it might be okay to back off on some of the formula once we've gotten more solids in her? Or do I need to wait until she is closer to a year before even considering that? I also want to make sure to keep my breastmilk supply in place until she's a year old...so I don't want to get in the habit of too much solids and encourage her to wean early.

ETA: Also not sure where/when to work solids in while we are nursing at home/bottle of breastmilk at daycare followed by 4oz of formula at every feeding, which takes up a lot of time.
