@Foodnerd81: ds had it at 4(?) months and I just dropped a couple until I got one then wiped the others off his face. Or I let some of it roll in. Of course 6 month olds are a bit more mobile...

Eta the drops worked by the next day.

My 5 month old just got bacterial pink eye, although we got drops for it. My son had the gel many years ago & we did the smear method. For my daughter, I've been expressing milk into a washcloth and then wiping/cleaning her eye with it. The drops worked right away for us and so far we've avoided everyone getting it (but I still feel like my eyes are weeping and every eye booger my son has is suspicious!)

@winniebee: yeah that spitting sounds about right. C has a cough and sucks at remembering to cover her mouth. I've definitely yelled "do NOT cough in your sister's face!" multiple times this week. Then again the other day I blew my nose so hard that I think I managed to ricochet snot into my own eye.

R got this around the same age when his older brother spat in his eye when he was laying on the ground. Yes, you read that correctly. I think it took about a week for it to totally clear (but not before it spread from one eye to the other...). We just held him down morning and night and got it in well then and I feel like I had to do it once on my own and just did my best.

@erinbaderin: yeah she's too wiggly now. Easier when she didn't realize how much she can move! But I think the spoon trick will work. I'll pretty much just pour it all over her face and wipe her up later.

@hellobeeboston: that should hopefully work. Will be extra fun when DH isn't home but hopefully it will get a lot better over the weekend.

I was using breastmilk on my newborn to clear up a blocked tear duct and I was just hand-expressing it onto his face. It might be trickier with a wiggly older baby though.

@Foodnerd81: yeah along the lash line is good. My LO had it at 6 months too... Just smeared it in there to make sure the medicine got in.

Washed everything he touched, washed my hands a ton. It cleared up in a couple days and I didn't get it!

@Foodnerd81: oh yeah, I've never even tried to get it in her eye - just a quick swipe over her lashes on a closed eye corner to corner and you're good. I don't think she was in pain - she had it one time as a baby and I don't think it bothered her at all. She's had a twice as a toddler and she gets afraid/upset when she wakes up and her eye is glued shut but once that's cleared and she can open it again, she's fine. Ours has always been a symptom of something else - cold, ear infection, whatever, so that stuff bothers her, but not the actual eye.

@Madison43: was your LO in pain with it? G has been really fussy but I don't know if it's from this, her cold, teething... And it's definitely from not sleeping and being overtired but I assume the not sleeping is a symptom of the other stuff.

@Madison43: maybe we were overthinking the ointment, trying to get it right on her eye. Getting it in the lash line might be easier.

The remember the ointment being easy - I think as long as you smear it along her lash line enough gets in there to be effective. As for breast milk, I think if you used a medicine dropper and aimed at the inner corner of her eye, it would get in just fine. That's how I've always done eye drops.

Eta - my older LO has had pink eye 3 times and I've never gotten it. Fingers crossed for you!

@kitty: ok that makes sense. Also I have a pump but it would be way easier to understand express onto a spoon than wash the pump anyway.

@kitty: how did you get the milk on the closed eye? Just squeeze it out towards it? I have a little oversupply so I probably could shoot it out if needed...

I'm not sure about the ointment, but if you get the breastmilk on a closed eye it will still seep in and get in there. I rubbed it around on my LO's eye and it got in there when he opened it again. Hope she makes a quick recovery and you guys manage to avoid it!

No idea on the ointment but for the breastmilk I would prob express a bit and then use a medicine dropper. Hope she is better soon! :(

My almost 6 month old was just diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis. This is after big sister had a bad cold that turned into an ear infection, I got the cold, and the baby got the cold. Ugh.

Doctor prescribed erythromycin ointment for her eye. Any tips to help make sure some of it gets into her eye to actually heal it? And I read that breastmilk helps- how does that work? Like logistically how does one get breastmilk into a squirming baby's eye?

And how long did it take for it to clear up? Did everyone in the house get it? DH and I both are already having paranoia eye twitches.
