Not to be super negative, but in my former line of work, a consideration would have been "Will I actually get to cut back the hours as planned?" It would be awful to take the hits to $$, benefits, and possibly reputation, then still get hassled about sticking around late or coming in early to finish a project/meet a deadline.

@regberadaisy: we don't get lunch breaks ever! That's a good point about future kids though, idk if we're done after this one or want one more. I'd love to cut back but want to make sure it's realistic to do so

@MOMTOLITTLEB: our vacation is a set amount so that won't be affected. Insurance is definitely something we'll have to work out but hopefully we can get that at my husbands job. The nice thing here is I can always pick up extra hours if I want

Health insurance would be my big one.
Other points to consider: short / long term disability benefits, maternity leave if you plan on having more Kids, do you still get a lunch break?

Good luck! I hope to do this or alter my schedule when my girls are in grade school.

How you take those reduced hours, how flexible you are willing to be, if it will be for a certain period of time, trying it on a trial period, how you will handle last minute work emergencies, reach ability when outside the office are all things your employer may want to talk or hear about, or make them more amenable to that type of schedule. Talking to other employees who have similar arrangements is also good. How it affects benefits is important, especially if you are planning on having more kids and how the reduced pay rate and benefits would affect things like maternity leave.

Will it affect your benefits like health insurance or vacation time? My husband accrues vacation based on hours worked while I accrue per month regardless of overtime or time off.

For me, I'd be worried about my reputation because my company has a culture of working a lot of extra hours but I don't think all companies are like that.

What should we be thinking about if I'm going to cut some hours at work (5hr per week). Obviously less money on my paycheck and in my 401k. Anything else I should be considering?
