Just seeing this now, you might want to talk to your doctor about prescribing motilium. It has been really helpful to a lot of Moms in the NICU I work at ho have supply issues.

Thanks! I've decided to not give up on breastfeeding. Now that I'm working just part-time, I will be able to nurse him more at home and hopefully that will help my supply go up. I might also up my fenugreek and see if that makes a difference.

I was able to pump a decent amount today and I'm off the next 3 days, so I'm hoping to get ahead and put some away in the freezer. So far, I have 3 feedings and I also pump 2-3 times during the day since Jacob sttn.

@Becksabee: my friend gave formula during daycare and nursed at home until one year. even though you may not be able to get a lot from a pump, your baby may still be able to get enough from nursing. maybe you'll have enough milk in the evenings if you're not pumping in the days?

i can imagine how tough it must be when you're only pumping that much in a session. i used to be stressed out when i would get 2 oz per session!

good luck whatever you decide to do!

@owlmom, I've also tried milk thistle and mother's milk tea. Neither seemed to make a difference.

@MrsBee, I've only been able to pump one bottle a day (if that), but i do breastfeed him before work and then in the evening.

Well, today has been pretty rough. I nursed him this morning, and it didn't seem to be enough for him. His number of wet diapers over the last day (I nursed him all weekend) has been minimal, which worries me. He didn't have one during the night or this morning at all. I asked the babysitter to try giving him a bottle when I dropped him off this morning.

My pumping output has dropped off more, also. I'm only getting 0.5-1 ounce per session - and thats pumping every 3 hours. I'm starting a new job tomorrow, and I need to decide if it's worth continuing to pump or not. At my previous job, I was allowed to pump as often as I wanted/needed to, but at my new job, I can only get a couple breaks.

Someone mentioned weaning myself from the pump and just using formula at daycare, and then nursing when I'm home. I'm not sure how that would work out, considering my supply issues.

I agree with Mrs. Bee, it doesn't have to be all or nothing unless that's what works best for you. But he'll still get a lot of the benefits of breast milk from a couple meals a day.

my pediatrician once told me that even if your baby gets 2 feedings a day of breastmilk, they're still going to get most of the benefits. maybe you could try for that so it doesn't seem so overwhelming?

Have you tried other supplements in addition to fenugreek? I had really good results with More Milk Plus. You could also try adding blessed thistle or mom's milk tea. I'm sorry breastfeeding is difficult right now. I'm in the same boat - 3 months in and having a rough time - it sucks. Who knew it would be this hard. Sending good thoughts your way! I hope it works out for you!

If that's what you think is best for you, then that's what you should do. Maybe just pump as often as you can to include some breastmilk along the way. But I'd try not to stress about it. You're doing as much as you can!

I've noticed the same as @thehistoryofus- if I'm not consistent with the amount of water I drink, I'll notice a dip in supply. It stresses me out. So I know how you feel.

Typically the amount of milk that a breast fed baby takes should not change between 1 and 6 months. Daycare may be over feeding him.

You have to do what is right for you, but it sounds like you could still continue!

The biggest issue for me is not drinking enough water. I seriously need to drink almost 3 liters of water a day in order to stay hydrated in addition to any milk/soda/tea I want. Also, eating enough calories (of good food) is really important.

I'm considering stopping breastfeeding (it's been 3 months), but I want to give it a little more time to see if things will improve. I guess you could say I had a rough start. It took 2 weeks for my milk to come in, and then I've had supply issues on-and-off. We had to supplement with formula from the very beginning.

Fenugreek helped me get my supply up a little bit for the first month that Jacob was in daycare. I was able to pump enough for him, but just barely. It's dropped down again, and now I'm only able to pump about 50% of what he eats. The amount he drinks keeps on going on up, too. The pediatrician would like to start solids at 4 months actually. In addition, he's started to teeth and doesn't always want to nurse, and has developed a bottle preference. I don't always have pumped milk, so he ends up getting formula.
