We didn't sleep train LO but she started developing her sleep pattern at around 3-4 weeks. I was nursin on demand and around that time, she would start showing bedtime cues around 830p every night and that's when we started a bedtime routine of bath/pjs/swaddle/nursing and I put her down when she fell asleep. She woke up twice to nurse (~1a and ~4a) and went right back to sleep most nights. Around 6 weeks she stretched out her sleep and only woke once around 3-4a to nurse. Then at 2 months exactly she treated us to her first night of sleeping through the night, waking up for the day around 630a. It's been fairly consistent night sleep of 8p-630a since then except during a few growth spurts where she got up around 430a to nurse. That happened around 3.5 months for about ten days and now at 4 months she is back to sleeping through the night.

I was completely ok with nursing her to sleep at nights but knew I should wean her when she got older. However around 10 days ago I started a dose of antibiotics that required me to pump/dump. That first night was hard for both of us. I was so sad I couldn't nurse and comfort her to sleep plus she was so angry she couldn't nurse! I did the usual bedtime routine and held her close while I fed her a bottle. Then I sang a lullaby to her while I swaddled and put her down in her crib. She cried and it took her a bit to fall asleep even with me rubbing her to calm her down. After a few nights she adjusted and now she goes down without a fight. Last night was my last pump/dump night so I can nurse her again starting with bedtime tonight. Since she got used to falling asleep without me, I'll probably stick with swaddle and lullaby after nursing to keep the new routine. I hope she doesn't get too thrown off with having the boob again after ten days without it at all.

We never sleep trained our oldest, she sleep fairly well at 2-3 months, it went to crap at 4 months (sleep regression, normal stuff) and then from 6-12 months she slept 14 hours a night straight. It was like something out of a dream!

The baby is 4 months and wakes up once or twice a night, fairly consistently but not like clockwork

@Andrea: when I was pumping around the clock to get my supply up in those first few weeks, feeds would take 1.5 hrs for us too! For some reason I didn't feel as sleep-deprived then! I am so diligent about getting DS to nap throughout the day just to prevent overtiredness at night.

@rubies: i have been told that I may have to wait till 4-5 months to see some consistency. Sometimes I feel like DS is advanced when it comes to sleeping (I.e. independent sleep habits) and other times he is behind (as he obviously wasn't blessed with awesome sleep like pp).

When LO was about 5 months, her two wakeups in the night were pretty clockwork-ish. Once at midnight (6pm bedtime) and once at 4am. But from the time we sleep trained (3.5months) until 5 months, she'd wake up twice, but it wasn't consistent.

@Sammyfab: DD was the same with naps. She never had any sleepy cues so I just went by the clock. She could also nap really poorly during the day but still sleep 12 hours at night so I never saw a correlation but I have heard other moms say that there is one for their LOs. That is great that your night feeds are so quick! Ours used to take 1-1.5 hours each!

@Andrea: For naps we go by waketimes so I watch for sleepy cues and watch the clock to know when to put him down. He has been an alert baby from early on and will not np unless I tell him it's nap time! We haven't seen any correlation between good nap days and early nightwakings though.

Thanks ladies!

I don't mind the night time feeds because LO goes back to sleep without a problem and we are literally up for 10 minutes both times. I was just hoping that we could see these longer stretches more consistently...and then see them stretch out even more!

I guess I have been blessed with an ok sleeper...just to a great one! Iam jealous of you ladies!

Anyone out there who didn't see consistent sleep patterns until later?

I'm with @Andrea - my LO has slept well since day one. He Slept 10-3am for a few weeks, then 10-4/5am and for the past month or so it's been 8:30-9pm-6am for the most part.

I think you should stick with your bedtime routine and he'll know when it's bedtime. If he wakes for a feeding, just keep it quiet and dark - if he goes back to sleep, I think you're safe. He should grow out of it.

Growth spurts tend to make routines a little haywire though. When mine was 6wks, he did wake for a nighttime feeding and that lasted a week. Otherwise, if he stirs, I'll stick his paci in his mouth and he's right off to sleep again! :D

We didn't sleep train. LO started sleeping 12 hour nights at 2 1/2 months. That's when we stopped swaddling and she was able to suck her thumb. But every baby is different. My cousin's son is 1 1/2 and literally doesn't sleep. She's up from 11-5 most nights with him.

Good luck!

DD was weirdly consistent from day 1 but that is probably atypical. Are you also consistent with the nap routine? Do variations occur at night if his naps vary?

I'd say there was consistent routine at around 3 months. Before that, he would have a routine for a little while, and then it would change, and then change again. Actually, it constantly changes even through toddlerhood! But his sleep patterns started to feel a little more routine at around 3 months I'd say. He's 2 years old.

I'd love to hear from moms with older LOs about when their babies started to sleep more consistently at night.

My DS wakes is 14 weeks and wakes twice to nurse (goes back to sleep no problem) over a 12-13 hour night but the length of his first stretch between feeds ranges from 4 to 9 hours. When will he develop a consistent sleep pattern (aside from regressions/milestones/illnesses?)?

We thought we were starting to see some consistency around 5-6 weeks but everything went haywire around 9 weeks. We have had a bedtime routine since 4 weeks.

Will we need to sleep train to see some consistency?
