@Corduroy: it should be straight forward. You just contact your old 401k and let them know you want to rollover the total balance to your new 401k. You may need to fill out a form for each old 401k to have on file.

We just did this. I agree with PurplePeony, first find out if it's beneficial to move it, what fund options are available, fees, etc. Then call your current one to see if they accept roll over funds from other institutions. If so, ask them the process to get them the funds and go from there. (Fidelity tells you to call the other places and get a check made out to your self, and then you deposit with them for example). If they don't accept funds, you could consolidate into a traditional IRA account.

Wow, I'm in good company. I have an old 401k, an old 403b, a current 401k ... and an IRA. Oy!

Chiming in to say that I need to do this too!

@PurplePeony: Good point. I'll have to find some time to sit down and look at all my previous and current accounts to determine next steps. I actually need to update my beneficiaries as we just completed our Will so I have an additional reason to sign on to look at each account.

First, I’d look into what the investment options and fees are in each of your accounts. It’s possible that one or more of the old accounts are actually better than your current one. If that’s the case, I’d personally leave the good ones where they are — there’s no absolute need to combine, especially since these aren’t accounts you look at often. If your current plan is really good, then the advice other posters have given on combining is helpful. Or, if you don’t love your current plan and still want to get the money out of the old plans, you can put them all into a rollover IRA with a good company such as Vanguard. But it doesn’t make sense to take money from a lower-fee plan and put it in a higher-fee one, so just make sure you’re happy with your options before you actually make any changes.

Its fairly easy! Usually a phone call and a signature.

Think about it this way, people need to do rollovers all the time - its not unusual or hard, its actually par for the course!

Of all the financial stuff you have to do in life, rollovers are easy and will relieve a lot of stress. Plus having all your money together will look much nicer and make you more money :)

It's actually super easy. I contacted the company who owns my 401k for my current employer. Told them where my other account was and signed a form that gave them power to retrieve those funds and roll them into my current account. I think they got sent a check and I then needed to sign that check, but they handled the majority of the leg-work.

Step 1 - call or look on your corporate benefits site to see what you need to do to roll previous 401ks into your existing 401k. (There will likely be instructions you need to give to the previous employer 401ks)

Step 2 - look for annual statements from your existing 401ks - they'll have an 800 number on it. Call and request to have your 401k rolled into your current 401k.

You can do it!!!

No advice but I'm glad I'm not the only one. I only have two 401ks but I've been putting off consolidating because I have no clue how to access the one from my prior employer. Oops.

Interested to see responses.

I'm pretty good at saving but I'm a lazy, hands off investor. I now have four 401(k)s. Three at former employers. Two of those accounts have changed hands many times. After I finish KonMarie-ing I want to get my financial house in order.

How do I do it? What do I need to know going into it? I probably don't have account numbers and passwords. What do I need to consider? I've built this up in my mind to be a big deal but I don't have a sense for how much work it's going to be.
