My favorite personal cough remedy is a warm tea with lemon and honey and I would give it to E!

@MenagerieMama: thanks! I didn't realize it wasn't clased as a steroid. My son usual responds best to a cocktail of albuterol and Budesonide.

@looch: Albuterol isn't a steroid, but it will definitely make you feel jazzed up! And this will only help a cough if wheezing is involved, and not all LOs wheeze with respiratory infections. Usually worth a try at least once though.

@MamaG: Actually about 90% of sinus infections and bronchitis are caused by viruses and antibiotics won't help :(

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I think you have a good pediatrician who isn't over prescribing! For your LO's age there really isn't any OTC or Rx cough medicine that will work well and be safe. They did a study of honey vs dextromethorphan in kids and the honey worked better as a cough suppressant! I think everyone else had great suggestions and it sounds like you're giving it your all. This usually just really sucks for everyone! Little airways get so clogged up by all the junk these infections create.

Yep, albuterol and a nebulizer. You have to watch for aggressive behavior as a result of the steroid, but for clearing lungs, this stuff works.

Can you ask the doc to prescribe albuterol and a nebulizer? That's the only thing that helps LOs cough go away. And it allows him to get some sleep at night (he's not up all night coughing), so his body has some energy to fight the germs.

@lizzywiz: Well you've seen my chub. She's 28 lbs. I've called our ped repeatedly and told that there's not much else I can do so it's frustrating. Validating in a way because I'm doing the 'right' things but they still aren't workong :meh: The 'right' things meant I had a toddler coughing herself awake for five hours last night which meant I didn't sleep because she was wide awake

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: Since some of the stuff I mentioned is for 2+, just wanted add that we started this routine (as needed) at about 20 months, dr. recommended (except for the agave). Pound-wise, she was about 23-24lbs.
again, good luck and hang in there, mama!

I feel ya! DD1 almost always has a cough but its linked to asthma. Humidifiers, teas, baby vicks...nothing helps. I wish I would have found something by now to help but for now I can only share your misery :(

(Oh!...SOMETIMES warm apple juice helps)

@MamaG: The doc said upper respitory was clear so no need for antibiotics. And despite a fever her appetite has been about the same. The mucus is clear thankfully...

@Anagram: I may have to ask for it. Our pediatrician seems hesitant to prescribe things unless necessary. He's always telling me there's not really a cough medicine for this age. She's just shy of turning 2 :/ So frustrating. Its been this same cough for a month on and off. Dry and persistent.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: oh. this stinks!
Our situation is a little different because LO is chronically ill w/ respiratory symptoms and often gets steroids, but here is our go-to cocktail that the nurses taught us to reduce her night time distress :
Saline spray while she is in a warm bath, to loosen it all up. We use this:http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Saline-Sterile-Nasal-Mist/dp/B000RDLPHC/ref=zg_tr_3761291_20
then out of the bath for suctioning. We use Nose Frida, usually. Then these decongestant drops: http://www.amazon.com/Little-Remedies-Decongestant-Drops-Children/dp/B001G60IMW/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1423927718&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=little+remdies+decongestiant+drops
After that, usually in the next half hour, she has 5ml Children's Benadryl (for the antihistamines) and 5ml Motrin, to reduce the swelling of throat and nasal passages. And last, right before bedtime, she has 2-3ml of agave nectar- that is not from the Dr. I read an article that said it was more effective than honey as an all natural cough remedy and we have been happy with it.
Good luck!

Both times our LO has had a really persistent cough from drainage our doctor prescribed 1 ml of bromfed at night. It's a prescription cough and cold medication. Safe to use after 2 in the right dosage.

Sorry of this has been asked recently but I have been a little off grid. :) We've been dealing with repeat illnesses in my house - colds, the flu, and ear infections with such frequency and intensity that we were referred to an ENT specialist. But I digress. Let's just say we've had very few weeks of wellness. I feel like we should have a sign in our house celebrating how many days we go between illnesses!

Our most recent bout of illness has been an old fashioned cold plus a left ear infection - and we're all miserable. The kids have had this cough that they seem to keep passing back and forth. It started with P (3), went to O (2) and now both have it. It's all day. All night. To the point where they're making gagging, retching noises and have been sick a few times - mostly mucus from sinus drainage. Not more than a few tablespoons worth.

Nothing seems to be working. I feel like I've tried everything under the sun. More holistic measures seem to make the cough worse while over the counter medicines barely provide any relief. We're running humidifiers, trying essential oils - I'm just exhausted. And I feel like I've exhausted all my options. Any remedies, suggestions? We all need a break from this malady!
