LO was just diagnosed with the flu last Thursday and I would definitely keep an eye on it. His turned into pneumonia and he's now on the nebulizer every 4 hours. (And an antibiotic, but it sounds like you already have that covered.) I was shocked because I thought the cough was all in his throat/related to the congestion, but it turned out it had gone into his chest very quickly. Hope she feels better soon!

@Anagram: She'll be 2 in March, so 22 months? According to my doctor, doctor's don't typically prescribe cough medicine or decongestants of any kind until sometime after two. But I've yet to be given any instructions on that for DS (who will be 3 soon and weighs the same as DD) so I don't have any frame of reference.

They did mention Dimetapp and perhaps trying Zarbee's but since she didn't respond to straight honey they're not sure how Zarbee would help her. But sometimes Similisan works? It's hit or miss this go around :(

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: how old is she now? The last time my LO got sick, the doctor prescribed her 1 ml of a couch syrup + decongestant...can't remember the name now. Every 8 hours. It helped with the cough a little! They usually don't prescribe it till after age 2, but he prescribed it in a smaller dose to LO at 17 months.

Bromfed dm!! That's what it was called.

I did call the pediatrician not long after posting this (before the comments started coming in) but I didn't want to respond until I heard back from him. Apparently I'm doing everything right to try and ease it for her, although he did mention the steam from a warm bath/shower to try and help if it happens again. Did not mention the cold air but I'll keep that in mind too, thank you @Bluebonnet:

With the antibiotic that she's on for her ear infection, he thinks that it's probably just breaking up all the sinus crud that she's been so stopped up with. Which, of course, would be the drainage like @blackbird: :( You're right, it sounds wet and awful. He said if it gets worse then by all means bring her in and they'll take another listen. For now her lungs sound clear.

We're just trying to avoid dragging two sick kiddos in to sit in a waiting room with -other- sick kiddos. DS started showing the signs of flu a few days ago so we're still pretty much on lock down until they're feeling better/symptoms lessen. Thanks everyone! <3

I would suggest repeat doctor visit to check for wheezing. DS1 had the flu about a month ago with wheezing. He started tamiflu and breathing treatments right away and it helped tremendously. I would also ask about dimetapp. The box says over 6 years old but my doctor gave me the dosage for my 2 year old based on his weight.

Definitely go see the ped. DS has had pneumonia a few times and it's nothing to mess around with. But a steamy shower can give a tiny bit of relief.

I'd take her back to the doctor. That sounds serious. They may want to give her breathing treatments or a steroid.

Have you tried sitting in a steamy bathroom with LO? Or letting her breathe cold air (from a freezer or outside)? That helps open airways with croup, it could also help with a nasty cough.

This is worst case but the director at DCP finally took her DD to the Dr after 3 weeks of a cough and found out she has pneumonia! She is 3 yrs old.

I would keep an eye on her and maybe call the nurses line and see what they think!

Curious, E's had a really nasty cough, too, but when I took her to the ped this week, she said it was all the drainage :( She's on antibiotics for the ear infection, too....nothing seems to help it, but it's so loud and wet and bad sounding.

DD has been sick for almost a week now. She started coughing early in the am on Friday and by mid morning at school she was running a slight temp. She ended up going home and by that afternoon she was running a full blown fever. It quickly went downhill from there. I ended up taking her to the after hours clinic where she tested positive for flu.

We chose not to do tamiflu (big mistake). She ended up being worse Sunday - more coughing, more chilled, more in pain and miserable. Matted eyes and congestion out the wasoo. Took her to the doctor Monday morning and found out that on top of the flu she also has a lovely double ear infection. Got some antibiotics for that and we've just been waiting this crud out.

Only last night she could not. stop. coughing. As in for over an hour, every five seconds or so she was coughing. And not little coughs. Coughing to the point that I thought she was choking or going to be sick. Holding her upright didn't help. Rocking didn't help. Resting on my chest on an incline on the couch didn't help. Water and honey didn't help. I honestly don't know how or why she was finally able to stop but it left me and little miss absolutely exhausted. The problem is she's started coughing like this this morning - and she's miserable.

Thoughts on helping her cough?
