@NurseMommy: I had the same concern as a nurse :) Once she was constipated enough to be acting uncomfortable, I wasn't able to help her with any other remedy and things were just getting worse. I found that we needed them just to get her moving and then after that we could make dietary changes (and prune juice a few times a week).

I've only had to use the suppositories twice. Hope your LO is feeling better soon!

This happened to us when we started solids too. It lasted for six days. Since then it's been a lot better.

Things I recommend:
- Prune purée, but in moderation, as it can become a dependency
- BioGaia probiotic drops (cheapest at the Costco pharmacy)
- Full-fat, organic, plain Greek yogurt on a daily basis
- Pears, kiwis, avocados
- Offer water mixed with a tiny bit of apple juice at meals

We have suppositories on hand but have never had to use them.

@NurseMommy: I only had to once, maybe twice because the first kind of came back out lol. Once the blockage was gone we could adjust her diet - in a normal situation. In ours we learned after a couple bad episodes that she needed daily miralax

Looks like I might be running out to get some suppositories. :/ Just wondering though... In nursing we don't like to give them too much because we don't want a person's bowel movements to become dependent on them. How often do you have to use them?

Agree with the suppositories (just glycerine infant or children's suppositories, non-medicated - you might have to ask at the pharmacy counter).

Prune juice also works for M (I give her a bottle with 2 or 3 ounces, I've also mixed it in with every formula bottle when she's been very constipated). It takes a few days to work though, whereas the suppository should work within 30 minutes or so.

I will add, so I don't scare the bejeezus out of you, that when I've used the suppository for her after 3-4 days of no BM, it's painless! she goes almost immediately. she just gets a little annoyed that I'm doing it, obviously..but yea. don't blame her ;)

We are dealing with this now. We have tried prunes, pears, prince juice, etc.
the doctor suggested apple cider, which has helped a tiny bit. She still hasn't had a big movement in over 10 days (just small ones each day). We are going to do a suppository on Saturday.

ugh. we've been there so many times. the ped told me to try prunes and apricots, prune juice, taking rectal temperature, etc. we did it all but the only thing that ultimately worked was a suppository (children's, halved the long way). i used basic KY jelly with it (per the pedi). I wish I had done it sooner..even with the suppository, the poor thing screamed and screamed. it was TRAUMATIZING.

diet didn't solve our issues...I had to put her on daily miralax for awhile. she outgrew it around 11 months?

My 6.5 month old is constipated; she hasn't had a big poop in three days and it clearly bothers her. She is trying soooo hard to just get these hard little turds out. We are doing purées twice a day, and I've been giving her prunes twice a day. What else can I do? My SIL said to give her a tsp or corn syrup. Um, NO WAY.
