@chopsuey119: Well, I have to say I am not grossed out as I would not think twice about sticking my finger in there if need be. But the photography part would never occur to me. Haha.

Hmmm...I think I have a spin off thread!

How old is your little one? When I was in childbirth classes they always said a baby isn't constipated unless it is small very hard pebbles. So logs wouldn't be constipation.

My little man has been constipated from birth (and he is breastfed). We found that his issue was dairy and soy in my diet. Once those are gone, he hasn't had the same issues. Could this (food intolerance/allergies) be the problem?

OMG! My LO just went poop. IT WAS HUGE!! Longer than my hand (fingertips to wrist) and it was thicker than my thumb! Wow. I probed her again because I heard her grunt, sat her on her potty.. and she cried the entire time. Amazing. I hope she pooped everything out.

LO had constipation when we started her on meats because she wasn't taking in enough liquids so my pediatrician finally said to give her a liquid suppository. The suppository applicator also worked as a probe to help her along. From then on, I made sure LO drank lots of water with meals. I also made sure to add a tiny bit of pureed prunes to her diet every few days. I don't do the prunes anymore but I still make sure she gets lots of fiber and drinks lots of water.

Speaking of things we do for our LO's, once my LO was trying to pass a hugely thick (width-wise) poo and I used my fingers to help her sphincter squeeze it smaller so it would pass through. Poor thing look so tortured, I wouldn't have done anything just to get that thing out of her.

I haven't run into this problem yet, but probably because our LO doesn't eat a ton of food. I know someone who has a child that needed help going for years because his poop was always so big! His parents has a thermometer they used that probably worked like a pinky does, so maybe that could work for you and help you keep your finger clean at the same time. ;)

Baby Bear is only 3 months, but she is constipated right now. No new tips, but thanks for the pinky trick. Hopefully she keeps them coming out, even though she cries. :(

My poor LO was constipated for 10 days. TEN days. Terrible mommy award goes to me.
Today I decided I needed to seriously do something about it since prune juice, apple juice and etc. wasn't working. I called my Pediatrician and she told me to give LO lots of fluids.

I remember Mrs. Bee saying Charlie's pediatrician probed his butt with a finger and it got things moving.

So I gently put the tip of my pinki into my LO's butt and sat her on the potty. Poor thing cried the entire time she pushed 2 big logs out. The nuggets were longer and thicker than my thumb!
I'm pretty sure she has more poop that needs to come out so I'm going to probe again tomorrow. *sigh

I don't know what to do. She got constipated because I started giving her chunkier pieces of food (pieces of sweet potato instead of puree'd sweet potatoes) and yogurt. I mean. She's almost 9 months old. I guess I need to continue giving her well puree'd foods?

What do you do to keep your LO's bowels moving?
