thank you all so much for your wonderful responses, I'm definitely going to get a list going and try some out. thing is, she LOVES fruit and will eat it like crazy - she just yelled out "dad I neeeed strawberries!". I think I need to get her some apricots, she's not a big fan but as a baby it always gave her squidgy poops.

I might have a hard time with smoothies though, she pretty much refuses to drink anything other than water or milk (once a day), she won't even touch juice. she's happy to eat yoghurt on her own, so maybe I might try it with some pureed prune stirred through. other than that, I'm going to pop past the chemist and have a look for a child safe laxative (i'm not sure if miralax is available in australia), and also some of those kids fibre gummies.

I talked to a pharmacist and she said Pedia-Lax glycerin suppositories are perfectly fine for babies and toddlers as long as its used sparingly, so I went ahead when DS had REALLY bad constipation at 4 months old. He was sooo relieved afterwards.

Otherwise, we feed him lots of sweet potatoes - it gently pushes out poop when you're constipated and keeps you regular. Warm water also works. I would put your child on a probiotic if she will not eat yogurt regularly.

If you don't want to make those constipation candies, you can just as easily throw a spoonful of coconut oil into your kid's smoothie - you can't really taste it and it gets sucked down fast. I make some for my husband with frozen strawberries, yogurt, coconut oil, almond milk, and a splash of orange juice. You can easily throw in some spinach or beets or use a whole peeled orange instead of OJ for the fiber.

@Ash: I am just seeing this! You should have told me to look!

We made these "constipation candies". Their basically coconut oil, but really help my LO keep things regular. We were using miralax but I want to avoid that whenever possible. She gets very constipated, to the point of needing enemas, but she cannot have enemas (ever), so I have been using these to keep things moving.

@MrsF: I buy the prune pouches from Plum Organics. I squeeze in half, add a handful of fresh spinach, 2-3 strawberries, and a spoonful of yogurt. I then add about 1/2 cup of water to really thin it out and blend. You can remove the yogurt too and probably a little less water. He sucks it down!

@Tanjowen: ooh! I've thought that smoothies might help, but it's so hard to find a recipe with no bananas. Could you be more specific about how you make yours? I never thought of using prune in a smoothie.

Spinach smoothies can help get things moving! Water, spinach, some prune puree and frozen fruit of your choice. I put it in a colored straw cup so LO can't see the green color (he's suspicious of veggies, sigh). Pear is another good one for my LO.

We had to give her Miralax and a couple of liquid suppositories when it got really bad. The bad thing with constipation is when they no longer want to poop because it hurts. LO takes a fiber gummy now and that helps a lot for when she is picky about eating.

Something that works for me as a constipated pregnant lady is this Good Belly juice I've been buying at the grocery store. It's probiotic juice and I've been much more regular since I started drinking it!

:crying:

It's so hard to watch them go through this. Prune juice has worked well for my 2.5 year old. I don't let her have any bananas, which she loves. I try all day to get her to drink more water but she's not that into liquids. Lately she's been withholding (trying not to poop) so I've gotten more worried. We just started miralax last week at her pediatrician's recommendation. Mr & Mrs Bee wrote a great series on childhood constipation on the blog.

HELP! I have one constipated kid on my hands, and I need your suggestions for constipation busters that have worked for you. I'm not even sure if there are any children's laxatives that are safe for a 3 year old.

Today we went to a friends house, and the poor kid was squatting in the corner crying her eyes out because "the poo poo is stuck! my bum hurts!". Its playing havoc with our potty training as she cannot manage to get the poops out unless she is squatting.

Also - what do you find constipates your LO? Her main ones are also her fave foods - grapes, blueberries, banana, sandwiches, pasta and meat. When she was small I used to make her a slow cooked veggies soup with osso bucco, and it would help with the constipation but now she wont touch it! I give her fresh figs from the tree but she is finicky about eating them.

Its safe to say, the poop (or lack thereof) has taken over our lives :/
