My nephew had issues when he was a baby (now 3 yrs) and his doctor recommended diluted apple juice or brown sugar in water.

@regberadaisy: ha! A year and a half later, I am no longer happy or excited when she poops in the tub.
Hope she feels better!

@Silva: ha! She pooped in the bath Wednesday night. Made me think of you. ;)
I've been pushing prune purée and water after solids. Her poop is softening up so she's no longer groaning to poop. But I can tell it's not normal / regular yet.

@regberadaisy: sorry, I was away, the warm bath helps them relax. We only had one serious case of constipation, and when she finally went it was while I bicycled her legs in a warm bath (after giving her prune juice and cider all day via medicine dropper). It was hard and hurt her, but I like to think the bath helped. It was what our pediatrician suggested.

@regberadaisy: A few times when I could literally see the poop there we gave a child-sized glycerine suppository. It's not medicated and gave pretty much immediate relief. From there you can work on diet, etc. I hope your LO has some relief soon. It's so hard to watch them struggle

Not to be alarmist, but if your child has frequent, serious issues with constipation, you should push to have them referred to a specialist. A simple x-ray can rule out a malrotated intestine (a congenital defect that can have sudden, fatal consequences). A lot of kids have challenges with constipation but if your child is regularly having very painful bowel movements, it's worth pursuing.

@autumnlove: Peaches are good too. And I've heard good things about taking probiotics.

Also be mindful of avoiding constipating foods: white bread, white rice, potato, banana, cheese. Also peanut butter if your baby is old enough to eat be eating that.

@regberadaisy: cvs & walgreens sell a prune juice concentrate with probiotics that helped my LO. Our ped also suggested dark Karo syrup when he was tiny and that worked too.

@mrsrugbee: yeah, I asked on a holistic group and a few moms mentioned it got better for their babies after eliminating grains. DD doesn't get any cereal but I have given her bread here and there. She recently got some and I'm wondering if it's because of that. I actually grew up eating bananas to help with constipation so it's hard for me to think of it as a constipation factor! Bananas are so easy for her to snack on when I'm making dinner!

I would also focus eliminate constipators - no bananas, breads or cereals.

More peaches, plums, melon, kiwis, pears etc. Fruit fruit fruit! For protein I offer legumes (chickpeas, beans, lentils)

@Silva: can you talk a little more about the warmth bath? Baby girl is super constipated. I can literally see the poop but she can't get it out. :(

Is prune juice more concentrated than purée?

The day we finally got my LO to go I gave her prune juice via a medicine dropper all day. She got more than with a sippy cup that way. Then when I saw she was straining, I put her in a warm tub and massaged her belly HARD. Especially lower, like between her hip bones. I could actually feel the poop so i knew where to press.
Apple cider helped some, too. Our doc suggested warming up the cider or any pear/prune purees.

My kid was constipated for about a month, with occasional small movements, we tried suppositories too. After the big terrible one (it was awful) she has been super regular. Hope it gets sorted out soon for you!
