@LuLu Mom: My son also experienced this constipation in the past few months. I felt pity on him when he poop as his stool is very dark, big and hard type that unbelievable to fit in his anus. He pooped maybe 3 times a week. When my friend told me to use this Digestic from Mimonis, I doubt at first as it is bad habit to give to your child that certain supplement. But he insisted that it is safe as it is purely organic. Fortunately, I am convinced and gave it to my son. I never regret with this product as my son can poop at least once a day for now.

@LuLu Mom: I found it near the rice and quinoa at a more upper scale grocery store: http://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes/how-to-make/basic-cooking-instructions-for-amaranth/

My doctor said you can grind it up (like in a coffee grinder) and substitute some of the flour in recipes with it. Maybe you could find a good bran muffin recipe that could help!

My daughter pooped in the tub for the first time and I was told this happens b/c the warm water can help soften things and relax muscles all around. Not encouraging pooping in the tub, but maybe after hanging out in the warm bath would be a good time to spend time on the potty?

YES. DS is a twice a week kid and sometimes it's awful. I find that if I really push the fruits and veggies and make sure he drinks mostly water/juice things are much better.
He loves dairy and carbs and will eat them all day if we let him. It's tough around the holidays with all the treats at parties, etc.
We've done Miralax & suppositories when it gets especially bad but I find that just loading him with fruits and veggies is more effective.

DD1 has a slow system and without vigilance backs up.
We limit binding foods, she cannot have more than half a banana, minimal processed flour, reduce dairy.
We have found adding a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of apple juice every day keeps things moving comfortably for her.

My younger daughter eats the same diet and has absolutely no problems and can eat dozens of bananas without issue. It's just the way my older one was made.

Ugh we've been going through this too! From some other bee's recommendations I bought this book "The Ins and Outs of Poop", and there is a children's book that goes with it "Softy the Poop". Reading the kids book (though sort of gross!) really opened up communication between my 3 year old and I about her poop / gave her new words to describe it.

How much Miralax is she taking? We did 1/2 cap a day for 3 weeks and now are on 1/2 a cap every few days. Also if she eats a single banana it's like her poop immediately becomes a rock so we avoid those at all costs!

Good luck, hang in there, it is so hard to see your LO struggle with this.

I try to get her to drink lots of water. She only gets 1 small cup of milk and if she is thirst she knows it's going to be water.

Steel cut oatmeal with raisins are good at getting her to poop.

Have you used juice? I know people hate the sugar, but it works better than anything in my opinion.

Dried fruit is especially good - raisins, prunes. Fresh berries too. Pears and watermelon have some laxative properties. Oatmeal is effective. When I bake, I try to use as much oatmeal/whole wheat as I can.

I would limit dairy as much as possible, especially cheese. Other culprits are bananas and applesauce. Have you tried a probiotic?

@Happygal: I haven't given her a suppository however almost went and bought one this weekend, but she finally went before nap and she was relieved. Our doctor told us if it was necessary to do this to have immediate relief.

I've never heard of amaranth before, i'll look into it. She LOVES dairy and I feel like dairy affects her a lot, so I try and limit her milk/cheese intake, but it's hard when she's a creature of habit and wants her glass of milk in first thing in the morning.

I'm sorry--I don't have a toddler, but I have seen my girl strain at times and you feel so sorry for them! Have you used glycerin suppositories before? You obviously don't want to use them regularly, but they can be effective if things are seriously backed up.

My pediatrician said amaranth can be very good to help in the diet. Does food seem to affect things--some kids are easily affected by binding foods.

We've been battling constipation with LO for over a year now. The doctor has us on Miralax once a day and we up her fruit intake when it gets bad (prunes as well) and she still holds it knowing it will "hurt." Any other tips you have to help smooth out a rough situation?
