@MrsSRS: thanks for the tips... I think I do need more of a routine with it. Maybe an alarm on my phone for water refills would work. And we've been having lots of oatmeal so that's a great idea to get some fiber and dried fruits in that way.

@peaches1038: I'm loving having some professional advice! Thanks so much! I'll have to try that too.

@creativemomma15: glad it helped!! You can also "splint" the perineum with your clean finger so it doesn't bulge as much when you're trying to go. Forgot to mention that earlier. Doing so will help with any pain you might be having. Just place your index finger on the area between the vaginal opening and the anus pointing backwards and give a little pressure.

I found it helped to dump a spoonful of flax and chopped dried fruit on some oatmeal or yogurt every single morning. That way it was part of my routine to at least do something to help and bonus I ate breakfast. If I wasn't allergic to colace I would have made that part of the routine as well. Or stored the bottle by the coffee pot. And I bought a giant straw water bottle and had set times of day to refill it so I knew I had to be done by then. Good luck!

@peaches1038: Thank you for the tips! I actually had some success with the stool method.

@ShootingStar: Fiber gummies are a great idea! I'll have to get some!

Thanks everyone for your advice! I will need to stay on top of it all with the colace, water & prunes/etc. I remember last time I would forget to keep up with those things and then struggle once it was too late. It was so painful last time and I just don't want to have to do that on top of caring for 3 kids by myself!

Oh god. It took me a week to go and it was terrible. I had stool softeners but I didn't try anything else. This time I'm drinking prune juice as soon as I get out of the operating room. Haha

Ugh I was addicted to colace for months. Major 'roids here and things have never gone back to normal. I just stuck with colace, water, coffee (always helps me!) and prune juice.

I had to use the big guns because it was 10 days and I was in serious pain. My doc recommended milk of magnesia since it had been so long. I went right away!!! I had already been taking colace, senna and miralax with no luck.

Try mixing prune juice with orange juice to dilute the taste is you don't like it.

Eventually I used a suppository and it worked but ugh. Would not recommend.

Another vote for the stool, plus dried apricots and a few spoonfuls of flaxseed on your breakfast. And water, water, water. Between a tear and nursing and it being summer I had to drink 1.5 gallons! of water every day for the first six months to avoid constipation.

Oh gosh I took colace for maybe two months post partum. I found it helpful since I was still taking prenatals. Immediately post partum it was prunes+colace+ lots of water and a towel to bite down on.

Fiber gummies, plus the stool softener. And lots of fluids. I struggle with pregnancy constipation and hemorrhoids and I take 2-4 fiber gummies nightly, and I up the amount if I didn't have a bm that day. Take the max amount of stool softener too. I take everything before bed so it works over night.

It took me like 4 or 5 days to go after giving birth and it was bad. I thought surely all those stool softeners would work, but apparent not. I had to drink a bunch of prune juice to finally get things moving.

Agree with what everyone said above: posture, colace, patience - it also took me over a week. I found hot sitz bath helpful. I know it's gross, but "going" in the sitz bath helped with both the pain and the urge to go. I had major damage due to vacuum assist and level 4 episiotomy.

i'd second the stool, and colace, and patience (i think it took me a full week)

You could try some psyllium husk powder. You can get it at any vitamin store, whole foods or trader joes. Also, proper toileting technique is very important postpartum to protect your stitches and your muscles. Basically, you want to sit with your feet on something so your knees are higher than your hips. This position helps to open the anal angle so it's easier for the BM to pass through. This is a great video, but you can use any stool. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pYcv6odWfTM

So here we go with getting personal & some tmi but I need some tips :silly: . I delivered on early Saturday morning and haven't been able to have a bm since late Friday night. I'm never super regular but this has been a long time. I've been taking a stool softener and eating prunes with no luck. Any tips or ideas for me? I have a 2nd degree tear & struggled with hemorrhoids last time.
