@purrpletulips: had to look it up! From 1 month to 4.5 months, she gained 2.8 inches. Haven't measured her since! She's definitely lengthening. She's grown out of sleepers the past couple of weeks.

@Tinyperson: Good for you. How much did she gain in height.

DD consistently dropped in weight percentage but was always steady or gaining for height and head circumference and my ped said she only worries if they are dropping in two or more categories; DD grew an inch almost every month her first year so her body was using all the calories coming in to keep up with that growth and not packing on the pounds.

@tinyperson: YAY! And she's more than doubled her birthweight (you should actually measure from her discharge weight, or the lowest weight, and not just "birth weight). I wouldn't worry & I wouldn't feel pressured to start solids either. P was in the very same boat, still gaining but dropping % and her pedi was in a tizzy.. every other extended nursing & LC I've talked to said she was fine though. I think sometimes they just get stuck on the % and don't take all the other aspects of development into consideration.

@runsyellowlites: yup, she's IBCLC!

She was just under 12 lbs at her 4 month appt. I think the peds issue was that her percentile had dropped. She said we could start solids, but I've opted to wait (we're starting this weekend).

I'm not as worried about her weight gain as I am about her crying every time I feed her. That tells me all is not well. She's a super happy baby the rest of the time!

That's great! Do be sure she is an IBCLC as any regular RN can be an "LC" with just a few hours CE & still not really know the ins & outs of what's normal for breastfeeding & still go by misinformation for growth & feeding needs.

You said the Wii weighed her at 6kg.. what was she at her 4mth appt? Most babies will double by 4 months, but that's not "always", and from all I've read on breastfeeding so long as their double at 6 months & tripled by 1 year you're good for weight gain. You can also check the kellymom site for "average weight gain" for a weekly range of oz gained (of course you would take the monthly gain & average it, not look at each specific week since some weeks will have more gain than others). Our pedi was not very knowledgeable in breastfeeding mechanics & we constantly butted heads on P's weight!

Hopefully meeting with the LC will help monitor better & get feedings back to being enjoyable!

I've got her recommended supplements and will start pumping 4x a day. I'm already drinking a ton of water, but will try to fit in some more!

good luck! it's good to be proactive! when i first started BFing, i thought the initial couple weeks was the hardest and that's the only time i would need support, but as R changes and grows, I realized that I need to keep going with checking in with the pros as issues arise.

good for you!! So many times I stressed over Wagon Jr.'s feedings and I was stubborn and never contacted an LC. Looking back I think it would have helped SO very much. I exclusively pump with LMW and she hasn't had any feeding problems so I've been blessed there, but man, if I could turn back time I think I could have saved myself a lot of headache and stress!!

I contacted an LC today for help with my 6 month old!

Over the past couple of months she has gotten fussier and fussier while nursing. She will go on fine for 4 minutes or so (especially on the right), but then will pop off and cry, go back on, suck once or twice, pop off and cry (continuing this way for a couple of minutes), and then pops off and cries but won't go back on.

I'll try burping her, but she cries and cries until I give her the other side. She'll spend 3 minutes or so there and then do the same thing!

She'll usually have 2-3 feedings a day where this happens. Her night feeding and first morning feeding are usually 15 minutes total, and she'll come off on her own all smiles. Her last feeding before bed is typically the worst.

Once she "finishes" I can distract her fairly easily, and then she's all smiles. The ped was a little unhappy with her weight gain at 4 months, but I'm not sure if she's using the WHO charts or not. She was born Dec 5, 2012 at 5 lbs 8.5 oz, and I weighed her the other day using the wii fit (so probably not super accurate) and she was 6 kg.

We're going to work on upping supply for a couple of weeks (I'm going away to my parents), and then we'll do an in-person consult.

Here's hoping we can fix this!
