I switched from a huge OB practice to a small OB/midwife practice @22 weeks with DS#1. It was not a big deal. Just make sure you hound them re: your medical files, as they usually take awhile to transfer.

@SerenaSF: i switched doctors at 20 weeks my last pregnancy after my anatomy scan. My first OB was great and I really liked her but her office was extremely unorganized and she would often make me wait up to 2 hours to be seen. It was frustrating and I could t do it anymore with my school and work schedule. I have zero regrets about switching and it was an easy transition.

With my last pregnancy, I changed practices (and hospitals I would deliver at) at 24 weeks. With zero issues.

I switched around 32 weeks due to a change in insurance. It was easy and I was really happy with my new practice. They just transfer your medical records over. Most of the visits are in the third tri anyway so I don't think it would be a big deal.

I recently got new insurance and my ob was closing the office I was going to. So I switched at 32 weeks. It was a bit of a pain but it seems like it is going to be fine. I am really happy with my new practice. Just made sure you get a paper copy of all of your records, even if they transfer electronically because things can get mixed up. I agree with @Anutka: that there are so many appointments at the end, I may end up seeing this doctor as many times as I did with the original doctor.

Just look in to it with your insurance - for me, I can't switch medical groups after the first trimester, so if I want to switch in the 2nd or 3rd, I can, but it has to be someone in my same medical group (not office, just like a subdivision of my insurance).

I switched from an OB practice to a midwife at 25ish weeks. And I didn't meet my primary midwife until about 35 weeks. Still had a wonderful experience.

You have more appointments at the end of the pregnancy anyways, so you still have tons of time to get comfortable with your new provider.

To add, in my experience, the OB doesn't actually come in the room until you're REALLY ready to deliver. It's pretty much just the L&D nurses up until then.

@SerenaSF: It's certainly not too late, not at all. I'm a doula and I see clients switch providers for all kinds of reasons as late as the last month of pregnancy. Go look around, you have time to find someone you really click with and switch. :)

With LO2, I switched OBs after my anatomy scan, so around 22/24 weeks. I really liked mine but there was no guarantee she would be there for delivery, and the hospital she was affiliated with was a little far from my home. It was close to my work which was convenient for all the appts, but in the end, I decided to make the switch, even though it was late in the game. I loved my new OB! She was there for delivery and it was a very smooth transition.

I think 16 weeks is still a good time to switch, if you're up for it!

I'm at a practice that has 5 OB's. The only one I had appointments with was my primary OB, I didn't meet any of the others. Of course I went into labor early while my OB was on vacation so I had one of the other OB's at my delivery. It wasn't a problem at all. I think I only saw him a couple of times during active labor and then again after I had been pushing for 2.5 hours to give me some options. The nurses are really the ones who got me through the majority of my labor.

I switched OBs, within the same practice with my first pregnancy. About halfway through, because my OB went out on maternity leave. There wasn't any issue with this (and i'm sure even switching practices, so long as your records are properly forwarded).

Recently my husband has decided that he would like us to check out a new OB, mostly because of how the practice I am going to is set up.

I'm a member of One Medical which is a boutique healthcare practice. It has a prenatal program that works in conjunction with the obstetrics department at UCSF hospital. All of my prenatal appointments are at One Medical, but my ultrasounds take place at UCSF, and I will be delivering there.

I really like my current OB. I think she's great and I feel confident that I am in good care. However, I can get frustrated by how long she takes to get back to me via email or phone, and her beside manner isn't always ideal. That said, I don't worry at all that she's giving me and the baby great care, which is obviously the most important thing.

However, because of how the prenatal program is set up, there is zero chance that my OB will be the one delivering me. She no longer does deliveries at all. This hasn't bothered me at all, but it is now really bothering my husband. He said he doesn't mind that it won't be our actual OB, but he has a problem with the fact that we won't have even met any of the other OBs that may be delivering me.

I'm not against looking into another OB, but I feel like at almost 16 weeks it's a little late in the game to be switching things up. Have any of you switched OBs mid-pregnancy? Do you think it's a red flag to not have met any of the OBs that may actually be the one delivering me?
