I think it's normal and wouldn't worry about it if she's gaining weight well. Every women's boob capacity is different. So one woman might only store about 2 ounces per boob and one might store like 8 ounces in one boob.

My son only ever fed off one boob at a time. My DD is 12 weeks and has also only fed off one boob at a time. She is a chunky little thing too. But when I pump I can get 4 ounes + from just one breast so it makes sense to me that she gets full off just one breast.

I fed from one side for the first 5 months. Still do sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it!

My daughter has only ever nursed on one side. It's never been a problem. For the first seven months I would pump the other side during the first morning feed, which helped me build up a huge freezer stash.

My daughter didn't take both sides at one feeding until she was 4 or 5 months. I would always offer, though. Otherwise, I'd start with the unused side the next time.

We always just did one side. I tried switching before she was done but she ended up with green poops and it made my oversupply worse.

DS is also a one boob nurser and I drove myself crazy worrying about it (even though he was gaining, had enough wet diapers, etc). After getting an earful from my mom (ugh, moms!) about him needing both, I started popping him off one side earlier so he'd take the other which just caused a hind milk foremilk imbalance and green poops plus clogged ducts from not fully emptying the breast. I spoke to a lactation consultant, who told me one side nursing is totally normal and just to trust my instincts on when he was full. Sounds like you are doing great!

My DS would be satisfied from one boob right up til we weaned at 7mo. I also found that once my supply regulated I could easily tell which side he had fed from last just by giving them a quick weigh with my hands! Not so easy to do discreetly in public though! :silly:

@butterbean: I used to forget which one was the last one I fed from, so I started tying a hair tie to my bra on the side I just fed from. I know they make cutesy things for that, but ain't nobody got time for that. :silly:

Mine did that for ~ 1 month. She definitely seemed satisfied. I didn't offer the other side often enough though. At her one month appt, she didn't gain quite as much as normal, so I started offering the other side and she took it. If I were to do it again, I'd make sure to offer both sides at least once a day rather tham just assuming that because she refused both for a week that it would continue.

I have a large supply and my LC specifically told me to try feeding only on one side per feeding so E can get to the hind milk (she's 3 weeks today), so you're probably fine. I feed every 2 hours-ish during the day so I don't have to worry about getting super engorged.

@butterbean: I can't remember at that age, probably every couple of hours. I fed on demand and threw a boob at every little cry sometimes.

I fed from one boob at a time until she was about six months old. It's definitely okay! If you are going back to work, you may want to pump from the other boob while feeding just to get your body used to producing on both sides at the same time.

My newborn (dd) seems to get full from one boob...I try to give her the other one, but she seems content and won't even bother trying to latch on....it has been like this since birth

Should I try to continue to offer the other boob or just let it be?

Fwiw she has plenty of wet and dirty diapers...and appears to be gaining weight (she lost a few oz shortly after birth but gained weight as soon as my milk came in - she was content with just one boob at the time also)
