@mrs. wagon: Hey thanks for inputting! :) So lucky you had no problems with fasting! It's pretty stressful. Hehe.

Unfortunately for me, I spike with potatoes!

But yes to walking! The week that my friend made me walk A LOT, all my numbers were sooo good. We ate out pretty much all the meals he was here and I had my lowest numbers that week. My nutritionist was very impress and said keep it up. (I wanted to laugh and say ha not happening but I didn't hehe.)

@Raindrop: hey, I just saw that you mentioned me and not spiking with potatoes. Haha! Ugh, I'm so sorry you are dealing with your fasting numbers... not much I can help you there, but I will say that walks after meals DEFINITELY helped my numbers, to the point sometimes that my husband would check his levels and his would be a point or two higher than mine! I once had a meal at cheesecake factory.. tried to be as low carb, high protein as possible, but I knew that it would be impossible to keep my number down, so right after (it was in a mall) we just walked around and went shopping for an hour. One of my lowest readings ever after that hour!! So exercise REALLY helped for me. It was really great to know that I could indulge every now and then as long as I built in a walk right after. Good luck!!

@MamaG: Bummers! When I told my OB I gave up on my number she started explaining to me about the pill. She did mention that she would require me to wake up in the middle of the night to make sure my number doesn't dip too low but she says that rarely happens, they just want to make sure, but she knows it's a big pain for most of her patients to do that.

I'm learning that excise is a big part in this overall. One of my friends was visiting me and he is kind of in a fitness mode right now and had me hiking and walking with him when he was visiting and my numbers were fabulous when he was here. I am just not that big into fitness unless someone pretty much makes me so now I think DH is going to force me to go on more walks. We will see how that goes. :)

I had my OB appt this morning. I've been at this for about 3 weeks and have not had one good fasting measure. I tried everything (except exercise). My OB is starting me on glyburide (2.5) and has requested that I check my blood sugar if I wake during the night. This is where I ended up last time (after much stress).

Just wanted to write here that I pretty much gave up on this fasting number. After 3 weeks of trying to figure out what to eat before bed... than forcing myself to eat it (which really took a toll on me because I don't like eating before bed). I decided to see what will happen if I just didn't eat my night time snack for a week. Basically just relax and not think about this 24/7.

I was prepared for bad numbers and maybe even being force to go on the insulin pill because that's what happens when you have bad fasting numbers.

To my surprise... my numbers got better!

I just talked to my OB today and she feels that I was probably just really stressed out before and now that I'm relaxed my numbers are better. She said try to keep it up if I can but she did mention that the insulin pill is really not that bad but does prefer me to try my very best with diet and exercise before resorting to that. Not sure if this will work for everyone and since I'm still very early on I will probably have to try harder later but for now I can relax till my numbers creep up again.

@Keds:  Thanks for the suggestion!

I had to go to a 4 hours GD class and one of the suggestions was also walk 10 minutes after meals if the number is creeping up but thank you for the reminder. I had kind of a high lunch number 137 but if I had walked a bit afterward it probably would have been better.

It's really nice to hear all you ladies had GD too. I sometimes feel like I'm the only that has it here! It also takes up so much of my thoughts recently too.

@Raindrop: like everyone else said, I felt pretty defeated when I first started taking the insulin. I was on humilin slow release overnight. But after a few days it was a huge relief. I also had a hard time bc if my fasting number was high, my post-breakfast number also went crazy unless I only had protein (which they don't recommend).

one other thing to try if your post-meal numbers start creeping up later in your pregnancy is a short walk post-meal. My dr suggested 20 minutes, but I found even 10 minutes made a huge difference. I found if I walked for 20minutes after, I could basically eat whatever I wanted during the meal, including a bit of dessert

@Nskillet: Very interesting. Thanks for the linky! :) My nutritionist did mention the liver is to blame if you have a high fasting number. This article really said it well though and explained it better.

She also gave a link for suggested bedtime snacks but there is only really two.

Bedtime Snacks

Small bowl of cereal with milk
Cup of milk with graham crackers (@AngelicOne: suggestion!)

I haven't really experimented with carb sensitivity yet but when I can eat more I'll probably do something like that. Mrs. Wagon mentioned that potatoes don't spike her... that would be awesome if it didn't spike me either.

I used to eat a slice of whole wheat with a generous serving of PB. I found a healthier carb I was always better off with. Are you move sensitive to some carbs? Some diabetics get spikes from cookies but not say pasta. Try experimenting.more, you'll get there.

In my first pregnancy, I wasn't ever really able to get my fasting numbers completely under control. I took a low dose of Glyburide with my dinner to get to a better place. I've just received my diagnosis with this pregnancy (20 wks), so I'll be starting this diet all over again.

My OB said the fasting is the hardest to control with diet, because it's really your body/hormones taking over during the night.

@Raindrop: Yeah, it felt really awful at the time to be told I had to take insulin, but after doing it for a few days, it felt really good - it really made me a lot less anxious knowing everything was under control, because the numbers weren't coming down no matter what I did. Plus, I got to have a small scoop of (reduced sugar) ice cream every once in a while :)

@HLK208: Interesting! Thanks for you advise.

My suggested carb numbers were slightly different numbers

Breakfast: 30 grams
Snack: 15 grams
Lunch: 45 grams
Snack: 15 grams
Dinner: 45 grams
Snack: 15 grams

After my slightly bad fasting numbers my nutritionist wanted me to up my last night snack to 30 though. The cookies are 23 grams. I must note these cookies are oatmeal chocolate but they aren't sweet at all... they are kind of dry with a little touch of sweetness.
