@tysonja: LOL! Baby #2 is a he, but when I read your post, I didn't think twice about the 'she'. My first is a girl and it still throws me for a loop when I think about having a boy!

I have the graco myride and have been using it from the beginning. A nurse just walked us out to the car and made sure he was in properly.

@ktdid23: I had a convertible from the start. The rule in our hospital was that she had to be worn if we didn't have a bucket seat. She was also fine in the seat on the drive home.

The only issue I can see (and why I would never go straight to convertible) is that when we car seat tested babies leaving NICU, the ones that we did in convertibles desatted and failed every. single. time. I feel like they must be slightly more upright so it is harder for babies to keep their airways open. For that reason alone I usemy bucket as long as possible. We do a lot of long trip driving and I wouls stress about them the whole time.

maybe just bring the bucket up to the hospital room and get her all buckled in for the check up, and just switch her into the convertible down at the car? :) we couldn't have lived without our bucket seat, but since you already did it once, you guys know your own preferences best, of course! :)

Following! We're planning on a NextFit Zip. I just hate lugging around the bucket seat, so I really don't see the point in paying for one! I need to ask my midwives how it's handled at my hospital.

@Foodnerd81: how interesting! I'm also in MA, and a big deal was made about getting her strapped in correctly and signing off on that before we left with E. Must depend on the hospital.

@ktdid23: we used an infant seat, but just wanted to say not a single person looked at how we had her strapped in. I guess someone must have checked that we had one but even that wasn't official. I don't think they can legally say anything about how they are strapped in here (MA).

@ktdid23: good luck. You could always use the bucket to bring the baby home, then change to the convertible. We didn't buy a bucket seat, so not an option for us.

@Mrs. Toad: That's what I was wondering - if the nurses would come out to the car or if we'd need to bring in the whole seat. Ugh. I'm hoping they will come out to the car so I don't have to unbuckle it...

I have a Chicco NextFit and we started as a newborn. My son was born at 8 lb 15 oz. We have either babyworn or used the stroller. We are in a walkable area and only use the car occasionally.

The biggest problem we had was the hospital. Normally, babies leave the hospital in the car seat to make sure the baby is strapped in correctly. We had to bring in the convertible, show him in it and then take it back out to the car. They weren't used to it but we managed to make it work.

@Emsmems: We love our Ergo and anticipate using it a TON... and I really hated lugging that bucket seat around.

Thank you for the link to the article - I saw that I probably need the infant positioning insert! Great to know :-)

No experience using one from the start, but I have heard good things, especially if you like to babywear and tend to not lug the seat around anyway!

Not all convertibles fit newborns even though their starting weight is 5 lbs. I believe the new marathons do though. Here is an older article from Car Seats For the Littles that talks about choosing the right one!

http://csftl.org/choosing-a-convertible-car-seat-for-a-newborn/

Good luck either way! The idea intrigues me for our eventual second child as well, but that's a ways off!

I'm due with Baby #2 in 2 weeks :-) For my first LO, we used an infant bucket seat (Graco SnugRide 35) for a few months before switching to a convertible seat. This time around, I am wondering if we can go right to the convertible seat, and how that works leaving the hospital. We have a Britax Marathon and it says it will accommodate infants as small as 5lbs. Anyone have any experience going right to a convertible seat?

Sidenote: I do have the Graco SnugRide from my first LO; I just hated getting it in and out of the car. If all else fails and the convertible doesn't work out with a tiny newborn, we can switch to the SnugRide, but I'd prefer to try the convertible first :-)
