Looking back, I wish I went right to the convertible. Honestly, I walked everywhere (and still do) and we only use the car as a family on the weekends for short shopping trips. I could have found better uses for the money we spent on our infant bucket seat.

depends if you are using a car seat stroller. then i would say infant. if you rarely ride a car, you're ok with the convertible. we used our infant seat for over a year, but we also used it as a car seat stroller for 6 months.

Everything I've read says infant seats are safer, so I'd go with that.

I agree that infant seats offer safety conscience and can be cheap. Most can be used with the vista do I would get a carrier

Are you planning on using a stroller? At 5 months my son still doesn't fit into the stroller well without the infant seat.

An infant seat is also really nice to have at a restaurant so you don't have to hold the baby while eating. Also if the baby is asleep from a walk or car ride, keeping him in the carrier is nice so we don't have to wake him up!

I like babywearing, but the baby and the diaper bag get heavy, so I prefer to use the stroller when going anywhere for a longer period of time.

I felt like the infant seat gave better protection for a wee one so I vote to get an infant seat. Some people are able to use it for a year.

Well, do you know what kind of stroller you will be getting? We have a travel system and up until LO was about 7-8 months old, we would take the car seat in and out of the car and into the stroller. Now, the car seat stays in the car and it's good for up to 35lbs. LO is 10 months and about 20lbs so we still have a ways to go.

I'm not a mom, so I'm not voting and skewing your results. But it seems like it is nice to have the infant one anyway-- if you take a cab somewhere, and you can usually snap it into the stroller base, carry it with you with the baby in it, and as a place to nap while you are out.
My sister lives in Manhattan and rarely drives, but she still got plenty of use out of the infant seat. But maybe actual urban moms have more info?

DH and I pretty rarely use our car - maybe twice a week max. I'm wondering if it's worth it to get an infant car seat or if we should start with a convertible? Normally I walk everywhere and imagine that I'll still do that when LO gets here.
So urban mamas, what's your advice?
