We skipped the infant seat and I would definitely do that again. We have a Combi Coccorro and an UppaBaby Vista which came with the bassinet. Worked great for us.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we didn't look at britax strollers so i'm not sure about what they recommend or what other users have experienced, but we did use our stroller that reclines from very early on with a similar neck/head support insert for short walks around the neighborhood.

I'm definitely appreciating all the input, and feeling pretty good about skipping straight to the convertible. I figure if we end up with a baby that hates being worn and won't go back to sleep after being taken out of the carseat, it's easy enough just to buy an infant seat at that point and then resell it for most of its value a few months later. I'm willing to take that gamble from the outset, in the name of minimalism and hopefully money-saving.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Just realized I didn't really answer your question. We walk to do most of our errands, with occasional short car trips if we're buying heavy stuff like the entire week's groceries. But hopefully we'll end up with both our Ergo and a wrap so we can figure out which one works best for us. I'm due in April when the weather is starting to get nice so I'm hoping to do LOTS of walking around outside wearing baby!

Just a note regarding babywearing: I love the idea, and my friend whose baby refused to be put down for six weeks swore by it. But my son was sort of lukewarm to the concept when he was smaller, and I have a lot of postpartum lower back pain. So babywearing doesn't work for us very well. My husband uses the carrier sometimes. I don't regret buying it, but it's not as integrated into our lives as I expected it to be.

You may need to wait and see what works best for you. We got the infant car seat and definitely found it handy for awhile. At 7.5 months we are talking about finally ditching it but have not bothered to install the convertible yet. At this point the baby is way too big to leave in the car seat overnight, so the benefit of easy transfer no longer applies. (He can crawl and stand up, so if he woke up fully strapped into his seat he would protest a LOT!)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Sorry, confused my Britax names! We have the B-Ready, not the B-Agile, so the bassinet connected just like the car seat. To be honest, I wish we had gotten the B-Agile instead. We rarely used our B-Ready after he outgrew the infant seat. It is an awesome stroller, but it is SO heavy. I got so tired of lifting it in and out of the car, so we ended up getting an umbrella stroller that we use almost exclusively now.

I don't know if this helps, but this was my experience. My oldest was able to use his infant car seat until just past his first birthday. But my youngest was starting to outgrow it around 10 months or so with height (head sticking above the seat) but was still at the weight limit. I was a big fan of using an infant car seat because waking a sleeping infant was brutal for us. They almost never went back to sleep and baby wearing wasn't an option for me b/c of my back and hip problems so as they got heavier it was so hard to carry them. I used a infant car seat stroller frame which was lightweight and compact until they outgrew the car seat. I didn't really use a stroller until after they turned one, really. I liked that when they fell asleep in the car seat I could just bring them into the house and let them finish their naps there, supervised, of course b/c of airway constriction. As for convertible, we went to Diono Radian RXT convertible car seats after and now never have to buy another car seat again since they go up to 120 lbs (5-45 rear-facing, 20-80 lbs 5-point harness, 50-120 lbs booster mode with a seat belt). I'm still comfortably rear-facing my 35 lbs 2.5-year-old. :)

You'll want to check with your hospital to see if they require that you show them the infant car seat when you leave the hospital b/c our hospital wouldn't let us leave unless we carried our babies out of the hospital in one.

@hellobear: on the Britax site the infant insert is listed as an approved stroller accessory too. I wonder if that means it's okay to put the B-Ready or B-Agile in the flat test recline position and then use the infant insert only during the infant stage. Thus skipping the car seat or bassinet. I haven't called Britax yet to see if this is what they are suggesting.

@SeptMomma12: I kept reading using the bassinet for the B-Agile on blogs, but the Britax site doesn't list is as an accessory So, I called Britax and they said the bassinet option is not safe for the B-Agile only for B-Ready and another retired model. Did you find it difficult to place the bassinet on the stroller?

@Foodnerd81: Same here. My son is giant - has literally been off the charts since 4 months old - and we still used the infant seat (Britax B-Safe) until 10 months. And he still had room to grow, I just couldn't carry it anymore!

We had the Britax B-Agile with bassinet and LO hated it. Never once slept in the bassinet, only the car seat. It's so hard to know what they are going to like!

we started with a convertible carseat from the start. at our hospital we just told them it was in the car & signed paperwork saying we had the carseat stating we knew it was mandatory. i was wheeled out to the car by transport & no one checked at that point either... we have a britax & bought the britax infant insert (approved with their carseats) to use with until our LO had better neck/head control.

i know I'm in the minority but we totally do not miss not having an infant carseat and have had no problems taking our LO in/out of the car even while sleeping (our LO is pretty easy going though...). and we used a k'tan until about 8 weeks old then switched to a boba 4g SCC (comes with a infant insert setup!) when we wanted to be out and not use our stroller.

We went straight to the convertible. DD is a big girl and was 20# & 30" at six months. We are a one car house and DH takes it to work every day. In her first three months she was in the car maybe six times. An infant seat would have been a total waste. My mom bought one for us to use when we visit and DD used it twice before she outgrew it.
We have a UBV and used that to get around town. I loved having the bassinet in the beginning.

@Trailmix: With our LO he has always had a long torso so he reached the top of the seat at around 8 months. By 7 months he was extremely cramped in the seat around his shoulders. He has always been on and above the 97% curve for height though.

@PawPrints: What you want to keep in mind is that you get a convertible seat that has a very flat (sleeping) position since otherwise LO's little head will always fall forward and that can constrict their airways. This is a problem you usually don't have with infant seats.

If you're mostly driving places a wrap is best, but if you walk alot to run errands and such a soft baby carrier is best. What's your situation?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: The Versa has a near-flat recline, I am not certain exactly what the angle is but it is very close to flat. It is a reversible seat, which I like, and you can even fold it in the reversed position.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we are average size adults. Not sure about dh as a baby, but big babies run in my family, and c was actually over 8 lbs at birth. I was surprised when she wasn't outgrowing all her clothes as fast as my nephews did. She's about 50 percentile for weight for girls, a little under that for height.

So yeah, I guess I did expect her to be a little bigger and outgrow the seat sooner, but we have a lot of baby friends who were in it until at least ten months. Most used it more like a convertible and left it in the base in the car most of the time after 7 months or so.

Jut throwing this out there- we used our infant seat until LO was over 11 months old! She is sort of small but not tiny and se fit in it until about a year, but once we bought the convertible seat we just installed it since we had nowhere to store it. Even once she got really heavy in the seat, it was still so nice to be able to move her into the house without taking her out of the seat- and I carried her up two flights of stairs to my condo. And I was adamant about having a bassinet for our stroller since we rarely drive and it's better to lay flat- she hated it. The only way she would fall asleep in the stroller was in the infant seat.

So I'm not saying it doesn't work great for some people to not have the infant seat, but I am just saying sometimes it's worth it to make your life so so much easier.

@PawPrints: there are a couple strollers that I found that work well for infants. B - Ready (black) has an optional bassinet for infants. Contours Bliss 4 in 1 (yellow) that has a built in bassinet.

Depending on the recline of the stroller the infant insert (similar to what you find with car seats) may be sufficent. I read a 60 degree recline is flat enough for an infant to lay and nap in a stroller.

Here a few links to help you with your car seat and stroller search.

http://carseatblog.com/ the one you already picked has high marks though.

http://www.momsstrollerreviews.com/ under the Links at the bottom of the site there are categories. For an infant I like the idea of Reversible.
