@oliviaoblivia: We know it was wood burning because it's a build in an area we're familiar with (my ILs live in the same area and my FIL is a real estate agent... all the houses in that area were built with a wood burning fireplace).

Thanks for the info! I could ask the last owners of the house if they know which one it is.

I'm following this because we would also like to change ours from gas to wood burning. We are in the same situation.

In the past I've tried to find some information and from what I've found you remove the unit and have someone cap off the gas line that runs to it. As long as your chimney and fireplace are in good shape, it appeared to be that easy.

That said, I got this information from random searching on the internet and haven't talked to a professional. Maybe some ladies on HB have actually done it and would know for sure

@pui: natural draft or direct vent. It really depends on how the exhaust is vented. If it's direct vent there is likely damage to the flue and it would be a much more expensive repair with masonry work. If it's natural draft they'd just vent the gas through the existing chimney.

Did the seller tell you it had been woodburning?

Our new house has a wood burning fireplace that, at some point, was turned in to a gas fireplace. We'd love to convert it back in to a wood burning one.

Anyone here turn a gas fire place back in to a wood burning one? Was it a big deal?

It looks like the gas unit is pretty much just inserted in to the fireplace and it doesn't seem like it will be much to take it out, but maybe (probably) there is something I don't know lol?

If it helps, the house is pretty new, like 20 years old max, so it's not like it was converted in to gas that long ago or the chimney is that old.
