Update, in case anyone finds this later: DS has been sleeping well in his bed. The first nap was nonexistent and a couple bedtimes were escape city, but a few days later and he's doing well. I just watch him on the monitor and put him back in bed if he gets out. Many times he doesn't get out at all until it's time to wake up. He's waking up a little earlier than I would prefer, but that was already happening. I don't think it was too soon, and I now have peace of mind that he won't try to climb out and get hurt.

That is how our first day of a twin bed went. He handled nap time fine the next day as well. Two days later, he realized that he could leave his bed. We locked him into his room and naps and bedtime were good again. He was 22 months when we switched.

Woo-hoo! He's asleep! He was also an exhausted mess all evening, so he was ready. Hope this lasts.

Well, we did it, and he wouldn't nap 😬 Oops! I was so confident that he'd he fine but he stayed in the bed for 20-30 minutes before getting up to play. I tried putting him back in bed multiple times but no luck. He did think it was a fun game though.

So we'll see what happens at bedtime. He was up in the middle of the night last night and up early the 2 morning before that, so it's not like his sleep has been predictable lately.

No help just commiseration. My 18 month old has been escaping her crib everyday for about four days. I'm so not ready for her to be done with the crib! But I can't figure out how to keep her in it. Right now the mattress is just on the floor inside the crib but she's figured out how to scoot her crib around so she can escape from underneath! Besides bolting the crib to the wall, I'm at a loss! So I'm definitely following this post for advice.

You could also try a sleep sack - when B started trying to put a leg over we just put him in a sleep sack and that solved the problem for months.

@macintosh: DD never climbed out of the crib so we kept the side up for much longer and only took the side down when were were potty training so she could go to the bathroom herself, so dont feel that you have to take the side down because your LO might never actually climb out

We moved our LO at 21 months when she started climbing out. She did great- loves her big girl bed. We kept our sleep routine the same except at the end we asked her to get into bed. Being able to climb in on her own is a big deal to her. We did have to repeat our sleep training for 3 nights Before she'd go back to her usual good sleeping habits. It's been very helpful for potty training (which we started at 22 mo).

We did this at 26mo. He was swinging his legs over for a long time before that but we kept procrastinating the transition. Then one morning we found him playing quietly on the floor of his (not really toddler-proofed!) room. He slept in our bed the rest of that week, then we renovated his room that weekend.

At that age he still had not figured out doorknobs. (My son seems pretty smart but for some reason he was slow to figure out doorknobs. I was really grateful for this, haha! We switched everything from levers to knobs when he started walking.). So, he couldn't leave his room. Therefore the only real concern I had was that he might fall out of his bed. It was pretty low (IKEA crib conversion) so I just put his changing pad on the floor next to the bed to cushion his fall.

He fell out a couple of times but it was no big deal. Once I found him sleeping on the changing pad, so I assumed he must have stayed asleep after falling. Within a week he had figured it out.

I was worried about this transition too, and when I posted on another parenting board about it everyone told me it was no big deal. In my case that also turned out to be true.

@erinbaderin: Agreed. FWIW, my 2.5 year old has been throwing his leg over the crib since about 18 months and still hasn't gotten it together enough to climb out.

I think based on his age that I would just not make a big deal about it. At 21 months I don't think the usual (okay to wake clock, books) would be as helpful since the understanding level isn't quite there. I would make sure everything is childproofed in his room, though!

21 months is really young - if you think he might not be ready you could just take out the bottom part and have the mattress on the floor within the four walls of the crib. When we moved B to a toddler bed the sleep consultant told us that before about 2.5 kids don't have the impulse control to understand that they need to stay in bed (although obviously that varies and I know some people have moved earlier and been fine).

We got a book about a big girl bed. Then I read in bed with her. That was it. It was easy for us.

DS is 21 months. He recently demonstrated to me how he can swing one leg over the crib bar and now I'm terrified that he will get brave and climb out.

I'm planning to convert the crib tomorrow when the nanny is here to help. He normally sleeps great in his crib but it's been a rough for a few weeks with starting daycare part time, colds, paci weaning, and early wake ups. I figured we might as well get this done while things are already transitioning.

What are your favorite resources or tips for this transition? His first time in the "bed" will be his nap tomorrow.
