It depends on the weight. 20 minutes per pound for 8-12 pounders and 15 minutes per pound for 12-16 pounders. I just got a 15lb one at Safeway for $2.98 total. You have to buy $50 of groceries. I usually love to get an extra one on sale for Christmas. Then if they go on sale again, I get another one for the spring. Cooking turkey for meals is one of our favorite ways to save money! If you stuff it...you might need to add 5 more minutes or so per pound. Remember, it cooks a little longer just sitting in the juices but you don't want anything pink.

Wish I could help, but hubby and I are vegetarian. I plan to watch my dad cook the turkey this year though, just so I'll know how in case we ever have non-veggie thanksgiving guests.

Those times look a bit on the long side for a convection oven. I'd probably do 300 degrees and about 3 and a half hours to get to internal temp of 165.

A convection oven also dries stuff out more, I found, so have extra basting liquid and foil to cover the legs on hand.

I agree with the thermometers. Makes the guessing game a lot easier.

Good luck! I cooked my first turkey a couple of years ago... but my mom helped and I made her take out the gross insides for me. Gross.

Go to Bed bath and beyond and pick up one of those plastic thermometers that "pop" out when the turkey's done.
Also, for a 20 lb bird you're looking at 4 1/2 hours at 350 degrees. If it's stuffed it might take a bit longer.
But seriously. Those thermometers are AWESOME. I always stick one in my turkeys.

We usually cook a 20 pound turkey at 325 for 4-5 hours.

@mrsjyw: Do you cook it at 325 degrees or 350? I've seen both...

If you thaw the turkey (3-5 days), then you should be okay cooking for around 3-4 hours. We always cook it with the breast side up so that the meat stays moist!

I'm hosting Thanksgiving next week and I have noooooooo idea what I'm doing! I'm going to follow this recipe: http://shewearsmanyhats.com/2011/11/mayonnaise-roasted-turkey/ for my turkey, but I'm not sure how long to cook it.

I have a convection oven and will have a 20(ish) lb turkey. Any suggestions for cooking times??? I've seen everywhere from 3.5 hours to 7! I'm sooooo worried I'm going to overcook it or not cook it enough or it will be done HOURS before we're ready... help!
