Last year in May we did the Portland and the nearby coast and I would especially love to go back to the coast. Stays a bit cooler and lots to do - Portland, beaches, canoe/kayaking (if you like that), hiking, etc. Also fun is Portsmouth NH or even getting up to Canada from Maine (I know not the US). Boston, out to the islands, Portsmouth NH is a really cool little city right on the water, and then up into Maine. Portland is also a really cool little city on the water, and you can either go up the coast exploring or go west or north to a lake to camp/explore lake life. I went during august a few years ago and it's fabulous. I went with my nieces and they had so much fun. They have the most beautiful playgrounds ever! You could spend a week just visiting those. They also have the mountain you can take the gondola up to, the stream to play in, summer festivals, walking around the village, etc. I loved it! Those areas are actually cool during the summer (it's not crazy hot like in Phoenix). I think next summer we're going to shoot for the PNW (Portland and Seattle). </p> <p>Washington DC would also be fun and cheap because a lot of the activities are free (zoo, Smithsonian, etc.). </p>
