Starting next year our state is mandating background checks for parent helpers in all classrooms, including preschool, so our coop is part of that. No fingerprints. Parents are never alone with kids, and are not hands on with diapering or potty time unless it's their own kid.

Our kids go to a co op nursery school. There’s lots of volunteer options without working in the class room, but if you are in the class you need a criminal record check.

MY DS goes to a co-op playschool/preschool where the parents/grandparent/nanny commitment is like 1 morning a month. They do not do background checks, but the parent is there in addition to 3 teachers, and really only brings the snack and maybe reads a story. It's less to help the teachers and more to have family involved and see what the kids do in class.

@Foodnerd81: others can stay to volunteer, but they have to go through the 1hr training/orientation, which is not really geared toward safety/security as much as the areas/items available to the kids. I'm my DD's class only parents volunteer, but frequently grandparents drop off/pick up or just visit the class.

We're considering a co-op daycare. Parents work two hour shifts a week and are never alone with children. No background check required.

There was a parent on shift when I was visiting, and in this particular case he was basically just playing with his own child.

@pinkcupcake: @GoGoSnoGirl: at your schools were only parents allowed to stay and volunteer? Or could grandparents or other care givers? I assume anyone who stayed had the same requirements (or lack of)?

We did co-ops twice.

First co-op: all parent helpers needed to undergo background check. No fingerprinting. Parents were not allowed to be alone with children or help any kids other than their own use the restroom.

Second co-op: did a background check but there were less rules. I don’t recall a rule about parents not being alone with children. By then the kids were all 4/5 years old and didn’t need help in the restroom so that part didn’t apply.

I would want parents to undergo background checks at a bare minimum.

Similar. No background checks, or fingerprinting.
4 parents + the teacher are working in the class of twelve 2-3 year olds at a time & only the parent or teacher can take a child to the restroom. Nearing the end of the year here, there definitely have grown some trusted bonds across some of the families & for me, at least, a judgment that one parent of the group seems a bit off & I wouldn't want much direct contact between that person & my child. I end up working 3-4 times each month, so I feel (mostly) ok with the setup given I'm there just about half the time.

My older daughter is at a coop now and the younger will attend next year. I didn’t have any background check or forms or anything to volunteer in the classroom (once a month I stay and help the teachers). Parent helpers are never allowed alone with kids and I can only help my own child to the bathroom. I never gave it much thought but a recent incident has made me rethink it. (Nothing sinister, just bad judgment).

If your LOs went to or go to a cooperative preschool, where parents stay and volunteer in the classroom, do the parents have to have some kind of background check, fingerprinting, anything like that, before staying at school? Are there rules about who can stay and what you can do while you are there? Curious what’s “normal”.
