I don't and haven't had to, really. LO has pretty much always been a good sleeper once we found the right combination of things that encouraged her to get good rest (crib, alone, in the dark!)

The short period of time we did deal with it, however, felt like I was slowly dying. I require LOTS of sleep to function (9 hours a night) but luckily so does LO so we've been able to go on with life easily. I count my lucky stars every day for this.

uhhhh, tears and coffee. I feel like sleep deprivation has made me so much more short tempered and less patient. It's by far the hardest part of parenting.

I cope very poorly when I know I will not have a chance to make up for persistent lack of sleep. I lose my patience quickly, think irrationally and get very frustrated. I don't know how parents survive multiple wakings every night when their baby sleeps in another room. I'd go crazy.

@birdofafeather: I'm the same way! I had no issues with not sleeping for 11 months. Then, she started sleeping 12 hours and even one wake up at night every week or two kills me now!!

Towards the end of pregnancy I got zero sleep, literally. It was very hard to work or drive. I had to call people on my drive home in order to stay awake.
With LO here and us co sleeping I get much more rest and feel refreshed after 6 hours where I used to be a I need "9 hours of sleep" person.

From 3.5 months old to 5.5 months old with my lo I was getting maybe 6 hours total sleep never for a longer stretch than 1.5 hours.

Thank goodness I was on mat leave, I was starting to lose my mind. Felt physically ill.... I'm actually surprised looking back though at the fact that I did continue to function.

Before baby I was super high sleep needs!

I can be all over the place. Sometimes I'm fine, other times even a few disruptions throw me totally off. For me, a lot of it can be expectations. Like I didn't expect DD to sleep a lot as an infant so I wasn't surprised by being tired. Now when she's up as a toddler even once, I'm a total grump!

I haven't gotten more than 3.5 consecutive hours of sleep in 9 months. I haven't gotten more than 6 consecutive hours in almost 2 years.
I am so cranky

I've actually been really surprised at how little sleep I need to function! As long as I get about 4 hours consecutive, I'm pretty good to go, and I'm a phd student so all I do is thinking-work...I do drink about the max amount of coffee that I feel okay with while nursing though, and I go to sleep really early to maximize how much sleep I get (like, usually between 8 and 9, and earlier when lo was younger and waking up more frequently)

I usually can function really well on no sleep. But this week I've been a wreck. I don't know if maybe my issue is more a nutritional problem?? Because man...I'm drained, and have zero patience.

The other night I went to bed at 9 and woke up at midnight in the glider with DD2 on my chest. Zero memory of the time in between, but my phone was wedged in the cushion and said I had nursed her at 10 or 1040 or something like that. A little scary..

This is by far the hardest thing about parenting so far. I often fantasize about sleep. I also fantasize sbout switching to formula so DH and I could switch off nights. It's so hard!

Hardest part of being a parent to me. No way to cope other than just deal, try to be aware, do your best. It's terrible. Really hard on me.

It's so hard. I like to think of myself as well trained in sleep deprivation situations, but with this baby disrupted sleep on a regular basis plus overnight shifts is kicking my ass. I think of myself as someone who functions very well on little to no sleep for prolonged periods of time, but seriously each overnight shift so far, I've been a total wreck!

It's kind of funny when your fit bit tells you that you slept 5.5 hrs with 7 awakenings. It's like c'mon, basically I slept not at all!

I don't know how we all do it.. DD is almost 5 mo so that means it's been almost 5 mos of not sleep much. I have no idea how I function day to day esp when she had a really bad night. AND I don't even drink much coffee since I'm breastfeeding!

How do you do when suffering from prolonged sleep deprivation?

I don't do very well with it! I can run a significant sleep deficit for a long time, but I need at least 5-6 hours of sleep to think somewhat clearly. Since most of my work involves thinking, sleep deprivation just wrecks me in the workplace! And puts me into a crabby mood at home...
