@Portboston: I agree. It's so hard to decide when the "risks" are worth it. I've also considered a diaphragm, but don't love the idea of spermicide in my vagina.

I was considering the copper IUD as well because I had issues with hormonal BCP (blood clots...scary!) anywho, after reading a few crazy stories about them, I'm not convinced. I know the issues are considered rare but they just scare me.

I had Paragard for 2.5 years. Despite knowing it would come with heavy bleeding, I was shocked at just how much I bled. Periods were a nightmare of changing super plus tampons with liners every 1-2 hours some days. I always felt insecure during my period about potential leaks and where the closest bathroom was. Also I started having this pain in my tailbone that got worse and worse. I didn't relate it to the Paragard until it was out and the pain disappeared. I went with Mirena after baby and am undecided on it but have had zero bleeding yet which is a nice change!

I used it for 13 months (removed because we want to try for a baby now). I cramped quite a few months after it, mid-cycle and before my period. That levelled.off though. My periods however lasted 10 days while on it, mostly spotting. I would bleed heavily for 4 days, then spot. It was bad. 10 days is long for me.

With that being said, I might get the copper IUD again in the future, as I don't want to mess with hormones (bad migraines).

I have a copper IUD, but not the Paraguard brand, and I've had it for about 2 years. Insertion was completely painless but I bled A TON for the first week after. My periods were really heavy and long for the first 6-8 months, but have settled down since. That's the biggest drawback, otherwise, nothing to complain about.

Also, my doctor just checks mine via ultrasound when I go in for checkups. He told me I didn't need to check for strings myself since they can curl up and be hard to find.

I have had paragard since 6wk PP. It was fine until I got AF back around 7 mos pp. I've had occasional light spotting when not on my period. And my periods are SUPER heavy. I want my husband to get snipped but he is not too fond of the idea.

I have Paraguard and am pretty happy with it. Installation was a cinch (a little cramping, a Lttle bleeding) and the only side effect has been heavier periods but nothing crazy. One sonogrms shortly after to make sure its in place correctly. I love not having to think about birth control for nine years.

This is the one I'm considering as well so I'm interested to hear the responses. My coworker has this and has been happy with it.

So, can anyone share their copper IUD experiences with me? I'm 99.9% sure that I don't want a hormonal bc, and my husband is no longer super on board with FAM, as weve had two unplanned babies (due to user error, obviously). We are also 99.9999999% done having kids.
