Is the copper IUD like paraguard?!
My OB recommend that it is hormone free!

I'm right with you, definitely not ready to say we are done, but definitely want a bigger age gap

I'm not sure what we will do, I kind of just want to track my cycles and use condoms, but I know DH and I and I think we wouldn't be too careful

I have a copper IUD. My period is much heavier and longer on it and I'm considering having it removed because it has an affect on quality of life. No other noticeable symptoms other than the unpleasant periods. I've had it for almost 3 years.

I had a mirena. I didn't have a problem with the hormones, but I did have my regular period every month, even on the IUD. It was lighter than usual and I don't have really heavy periods anyway. I was told that because I had regular periods that I could try even before my first period after removal. We didn't for timing purposes, but I did get pregnant first try.

I had a copper iud and every month I spotted for about 7 days and had a full on period for 3 days. Still not sure if that was worth it, I might do the Mirena next time. Cramps weren't bad for me, evened out after a few months.

I had the copper one because I can't do hormonal bc. I had it take out right at 1 yr. I had cramping more days than not and my periods were very heavy. It also made me feel off. May not have been related but my anxiety level skyrocketed a couple months after I got it and I felt like I was in a haze a lot. I ultimately decided to have it removed after reading a lot of similar experiences online. That was almost 3 months ago and I have finally started to feel a lot better. The NP said they have a lot of requests to have them removed after 6-9 months due to side effects.

I had a copper one -- I have PCOS and don't regularly ovulate/AF, so I figured an occasional heavy period (if it happened) wouldn't be a big deal. I had it for about 9m and just felt...off. It wasn't necessarily the initial cramping/spotting, which went away after 2-3w, and I never actually got a period to compare it to. But about every 10d, I would feel like crap for 1-2 days...like a period was coming, kinda crampy...and then nothing would happen and I'd be fine for another 10 or so days. I got it taken out and that all stopped immediately, so something about it wasn't working for me!

I have a copper IUD and really like it--I didn't want the hormones (both for me and the environment). I had light to normal periods without birth control and find them comparable now. I also like that I can have it in for 10 years (v. 5 for the Mirena). But my best friend is a doctor and says that she takes more coppers out than Mirenas.

My OB works out of a Catholic hospital, so I had to get a referral to get the copper. (She would have given me a Mirena as long as I told her I had a a "heavy" period--she said our definitions of heavy did not need to match. It was a bizarre conversation!)

I have had Mirena twice. One when we got married before TTC and another after LO. I will do one again in the future. I was on BCP for a few years in college and my body did not do well. I love not having a period with Mirena and the fact that we don't have to remember any birth control. I had some spotting the second time on and off for a month or two after it was placed but I'll take that over monster periods!

My sister has a copper one and had to go on an iron supplement from the bleeding!
I have a Mirena. I like it. I think I'm experiencing some hormonal side effects, but much more minimal than the pill. I did spot/bleed for six months.

I'm on my second Mirena and I love it. It's like a tampon commercial...I can do anything and my period doesn't interrupt! I barely even get a period, sometimes I take a pregnancy test just to confirm that blip was indeed my period.

I was on the pill before TTC LO1. Then I got Mirena. I know plenty have had horror stories but I had zero issues. I still had some spotting, but never a regular period, so that was awesome. I got it out in Dec and then we started TTC in April and got pregnant right away.

I had a mirena for 5 years and loved it. Cycles returned to normal the month I got it out, and now I have DD. After our second child I will get it again.

@mfa_lady: I thought about copper because I wanted hormone free (some because made me hormonal) but I have heavy periods. Overall my ob said he has more people asking for the copper to be removed than the mirena. I'm only a week in on the mirena and I'm bleeding a fair amount but feel ok.

I've had two Mirenas. Love it!
No periods. No forgetting pills.
The amount of hormone getting into your bloodstream is infinitesimal compared to the dosage in BC.

My mom had the copper one and bled for three weeks out of the month. She was so anti-IUD when I got mine because of her experience.

Don't get too excited: I'm still pregnant. Haha! But, sitting here at 39+5 and waiting on a baby, I'm contemplating the decisions I'll have to make after she's born. :P

I know I want an IUD. We probably want more kids, but I need a bigger gap between 2 and 3 than I got with 1 and 2! Anyway, birth control pills are super hard for me to keep track of AND I think they make me a little crazy, so I'm going a different route this time.

Tell me about your experiences with either of these kinds! I love that the copper one isn't hormonal, but I've heard people get MONSTER periods on them. I usually have really light periods, which my doc says bodes well for me, but you just never know.

As for Mirena, if you've taken it (especially if you've taken the pill before, too, and can compare), did you feel lots of hormonal stuff going on while on it? Any other major issues?

Thanks in advance. :)
